Both he and his brother, Alexander, were forced into the public spotlight after Alexander testified before Congress about phone calls between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that ultimately led to the U.S. president\u2019s first impeachment trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eugene Vindman was a behind-the-scenes advisor for his brother during those proceedings, and like his brother was eventually forced out of that role by the Trump administration as retaliation. He has been active in advocacy work for U.S. support to Ukraine in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vindman said that continued alliance with Ukraine will be a campaign talking point in his bid to replace Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., who announced Monday that she will leave Congress next year and launch her own bid to become governor of Virginia in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/05\/18\/trump-improperly-punished-brother-of-impeachment-witness-military-watchdog-finds\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20038793693881.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump improperly punished brother of impeachment witness, military watchdog finds<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">But the Pentagon inspector general does not recommend any firings or adverse actions in response to the infractions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with local issues for the northern Virginia district, Vindman also plans to focus on improving veterans support programs and preserving the non-political nature of the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlex and I have already taken the brunt of this, and we\u2019ve seen things getting worse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLast time Trump ran, I was in uniform, I was not in a position to do anything political. This time, I want to juxtapose what integrity is, what Army values are versus what Trump is presenting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has attacked both Vindman brothers on social media in the past. He is currently the front-runner in national polls for the Republican presidential nomination for 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vindman, who deployed to Iraq during his time in the Army, will likely face a primary challenge for Spanberger\u2019s seat in March as well as a Republican opponent next fall.
