The Iraq war veteran, who is Black, is also the first woman of color to ever hold the VA leadership post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday\u2019s vote came almost two months after<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/07\/18\/gop-senator-blocks-historic-va-leadership-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, objected to her nomination <\/a>over concerns that she failed to protect personal information of VA whistleblowers during her duties as department chief of staff. The move was another in a long series of confirmation blockades by Republican lawmakers for defense and veterans posts this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/05\/30\/army-vet-turned-dc-insider-now-a-historic-nominee-for-veterans-affairs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/52246094819_cf96d0e925_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army vet turned DC insider now a historic nominee for Veterans Affairs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA Chief of Staff Tanya Bradsher is in line to be the first woman confirmed to the department&#039;s second-highest post.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Senate Democratic leaders worked around Grassley\u2019s opposition to advance Bradsher\u2019s nomination. She is expected to be sworn into the post in the next few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is clear that she is qualified for the job and ready to hit the ground running to serve our nation\u2019s veterans,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/05\/24\/vets-will-see-a-cost-of-living-boost-in-benefit-checks-next-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester<\/a>, D-Mont., said in a floor speech Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA has a lot of work on its plate, from rolling out the electronic health record modernization program to working with the defense department to improve the transition process for service members leaving the military, and these are challenges that VA\u2019s number-two official is directly tasked with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bradsher replaces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/03\/31\/departing-va-deputy-sees-progress-success-in-department-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Remy<\/a>, who stepped down from the post in March. Her confirmation puts Senate-approved leaders at each of VA\u2019s five top leadership posts for the first time since May 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bradsher served in the Army for 20 years before retiring in 2003 as a lieutenant colonel, and has held a variety of roles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/staff-biographies\/tanya-bradsher\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defense Department, Department of Homeland Security and White House<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She received largely positive reviews from members of the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee for her work as VA chief of staff during her confirmation hearing in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grassley\u2019s concerns centered on Bradsher\u2019s oversight responsibilities for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/07\/18\/gop-senator-blocks-historic-va-leadership-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA\u2019s Integrated Enterprise Workflow Solution (VIEWS) system<\/a>, which tracks all department correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics of the system have said that personal information \u2014 including the names and accusations of whistleblowers \u2014 can be accessed by potential wrongdoers through flaws in the system. Grassley said investigations and fixes promised by VA leadership are long overdue, and he accused Bradsher and others at the department of \u201cstonewalling my investigations into VA corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement ahead of the vote, Grassley said that none of the issues have been adequately addressed since he raised his objections and that he believes Bradsher is \u201cunqualified to lead at the VA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bradsher\u2019s nomination is the second VA leadership post to be temporarily blocked by Grassley this year. In March, the senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/03\/15\/gop-senator-blocks-biden-nominee-to-force-answers-from-va\/\" target=\"_blank\">opposed the nomination of Under Secretary of Benefits nominee Josh Jacobs<\/a> over concerns over other unresolved whistleblower allegations leveled against the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacobs was approved by a 74-25 vote after an extra six-week wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 300 senior Defense Department promotions and appointments have been stalled since February by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/08\/25\/senators-could-be-forced-to-ram-through-some-military-nominations-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Tommy Tuberville<\/a>, R-Ala., over his objections to the military\u2019s abortion access policies. Department leaders and Senate Democrats have accused him of undermining national security with those holds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Army veteran was nominated to the
