{"id":31203,"date":"2024-02-22T23:43:12","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T23:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/02\/22\/cyberattack-slows-prescription-processing-at-military-pharmacies\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:00:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:00:33","slug":"cyberattack-slows-prescription-processing-at-military-pharmacies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/fedlife\/2024\/02\/22\/cyberattack-slows-prescription-processing-at-military-pharmacies\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyberattack slows prescription processing at military pharmacies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military clinics and hospitals worldwide have been affected by a cyberattack on the United State\u2019s largest commercial prescription processor, Change Healthcare, according to officials with the Defense Health Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also has affected some<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/military-benefits\/health-care\/2022\/10\/21\/is-your-pharmacy-leaving-the-tricare-network-in-a-few-days\/\" target=\"_blank\"> retail pharmacies <\/a>across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the time being, officials ask for patience, \u201cwhile pharmacies take longer than usual to safely fill prescription needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until the issue is resolved,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/military-benefits\/health-care\/2023\/01\/12\/more-pharmacies-rejoin-tricare-network-are-there-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\"> military pharmacies<\/a> will use a manual procedure to fill outpatient prescriptions, health officials said in a Thursday statement to Military Times. Priority goes to urgent prescriptions, followed by routine prescriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/military-benefits\/health-care\/2023\/01\/12\/more-pharmacies-rejoin-tricare-network-are-there-enough\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635657391338453266-181192888jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More pharmacies rejoin Tricare network. Are there enough?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An additional 4,356 independent pharmacies will rejoin the Tricare retail pharmacy network, effective Jan. 15.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach military hospital and clinic will continue to offer pharmacy operations based on their local manning and resources,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, Change Healthcare disconnected its systems to protect patient information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce we became aware of the outside threat, in the interest of protecting our partners and patients, we took immediate action to disconnect our systems to prevent further impact,\u201d stated Change Healthcare\u2019s status web page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest update said the company expected the disruptions to last at least through Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company\u2019s website states that it provides provides \u201cindustry-leading analytics, expansive data, and unparalleled connection and data transfer between providers, payers, and consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any references that this is caused by a technical issue with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/09\/13\/senators-press-pentagon-on-new-medical-systems-recruiting-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\">MHS Genesis<\/a> are \u201cinaccurate,\u201d military health officials stated. Genesis is the military\u2019s electronic health record system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military pharmacies around the world have been posting notices about the issue and their procedures in response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is impacting pharmacies at [military treatment facilities] enterprise-wide,\u201d read a sign posted at the 19th Medical Group pharmacy at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AFamnncosnco\/posts\/pfbid02i28ADrs8FXzz2kkYhQSXKYg6DAPrLbEH7cWkdTFGygMvJuNHwojdrRCYcae9PBJPl\" target=\"_blank\">shared on social media<\/a> Thursday. \u201cWe do not know how long it will be down. They are working to resolve it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, the 22nd Medical Group pharmacy posted on social media that it can\u2019t process new prescriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, our Pharmacy remains open and will continue to dispense already-completed prescriptions.
