{"id":31246,"date":"2024-03-20T15:16:24","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T15:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/03\/20\/lawmakers-push-va-to-improve-military-sexual-assault-response\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:04:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:04:05","slug":"lawmakers-push-va-to-improve-military-sexual-assault-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/2024\/03\/20\/lawmakers-push-va-to-improve-military-sexual-assault-response\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers push VA to improve military sexual assault response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bipartisan group of senators is pushing Veterans Affairs leaders to step up efforts to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/09\/01\/the-militarys-sexual-assault-problem-is-only-getting-worse\/\" target=\"_blank\">victims of military sexual assault <\/a>through better outreach and education about available services, saying that too few potential beneficiaries are aware of the help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move follows a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/02\/27\/mental-health-outreach-efforts-need-more-focus-on-women-vets-report\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Disabled American Veterans report<\/a> last month, which recommended more focus on women veterans mental health issues, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/03\/11\/veterans-affairs-gets-13-budget-boost-under-white-house-fy25-request\/\" target=\"_blank\">a White House budget request<\/a> last week to boost funding for women veterans medical care by 11% in fiscal 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in a letter to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/salute-veterans\/2023\/11\/08\/mcdonough-wants-va-to-reach-every-veteran-in-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a> sent Tuesday, 33 Democratic and Republican lawmakers noted that publicity of existing services appears to be a bigger barrier to care than available resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we commend the VA for providing free counseling and evidence-based treatment for women with military sexual trauma, these services are clearly under-utilized, as only approximately half of female veterans with an MST history use VA healthcare,\u201d the message stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/03\/01\/va-sites-need-more-rape-kits-trained-staff-to-aid-sex-assault-victims\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6361457.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA sites need more rape kits, trained staff to aid sex assault victims<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lawmakers are pushing for improvements after an inspector general report found limited resources for victims at many VA medical facilities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWomen veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma already endure so many hardships. Let\u2019s work to eliminate any barriers to VA care so they can access the high-quality care that they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past VA studies have found as many as one in three women veterans have experienced some form of sexual assault or abuse while serving in the military. A 2022 study by the department found that women who experienced military sexual trauma are 65% more likely to contemplate suicide than their peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter \u2014 led by Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee member Angus King, I-Maine \u2014 calls for the department to direct the Women Veterans Call Center \u201cto conduct additional outreach tailored to women veterans with military sexual trauma\u201d to ensure individuals are aware of available support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers also asked for details on ongoing suicide prevention efforts and medical center training requirements to ensure that the issue is being addressed by VA leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, VA press secretary Terrence Hayes said department officials are working on the issue, particularly when it comes to disability claims for veterans with military sexual trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA is committed to a compassionate experience for veteran survivors of military sexual trauma filing for benefits that is trauma-informed, sensitive, and treats them with dignity,\u201d he said. \u201cWe recognize the courage and strength of MST survivors to come forward and file a claim for disability compensation. That\u2019s why VA treats all claims, but especially those related to MST, with the utmost respect and the seriousness they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hayes said other improvements are planned in coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs leaders have identified women veterans as one of the fastest growing populations within the veterans community.
