Ambrose Finnegan, were unable to be recovered \u201cbecause there used to be a lot of cannibals\u201d in the southwestern Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serving in the U.S. Army Air Force during the Second World War, Finnegan was a passenger of an A-20 Havoc, when, for \u201cunknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dpaa-mil.sites.crmforce.mil\/dpaaProfile?id=a0Jt000001nzWi4EAE\" target=\"_blank\">an account published by the Defense POW\/MIA Accounting agency<\/a>. \u201cBoth engines failed at low altitude, and the aircraft\u2019s nose hit the water hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd my uncle, they called him \u2014 Ambrose, they called him Bosie\u2026 and he became an Army Air Corps, before the Air Force came along, he flew those single engine planes as reconnaissance over war zones,\u201d Biden said during remarks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/17\/politics\/biden-uncle-cannibals-new-guinea\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">United Steelworkers Headquarters in Pittsburgh<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd he got shot down in New Guinea, and they never found the body because there used to be a lot of cannibals \u2014 for real \u2014 in that part of the New Guinea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden\u2019s claim contradicts the DPAA report, which notes that \u201cThree men failed to emerge from the sinking wreck and were lost in the crash. One crew member survived and was rescued by a passing barge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president\u2019s comments on cannibalism, meanwhile, are not far off. In 1992, nearly half a century after World War II, Japanese historian Toshiyuki Tanaka revealed that he had <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/2e7e9a8dae17cc29862c4562b44c9225\" target=\"_blank\">uncovered more than 100 cases of cannibalism<\/a> committed by Japanese troops in Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese documents clearly show that this cannibalism was done by a whole group of Japanese soldiers, and in some cases they were not even starving,\u201d Tanaka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A translated Imperial Army order from Nov. 18, 1944, described cannibalism as the \u201cworst human crime\u201d and blamed increases in murders and the possession of human flesh by soldiers on a \u201clack of thoroughness in moral training,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2e7e9a8dae17cc29862c4562b44c9225\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn all cases, the condition of the remains were such that there can be no doubt that the bodies had been dismembered and portions of flesh cooked,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2e7e9a8dae17cc29862c4562b44c9225\">one Australian lieutenant recalled after finding the dismembered remains of several comrades<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military was ultimately unable to recover the remains of the president\u2019s uncle, whose life and service are memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPresident Biden is proud of his uncle\u2019s service in uniform, who lost his life when the military aircraft he was on crashed in the Pacific after taking off near New Guinea,\u201d White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates told CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe president highlighted his uncle\u2019s story as he made the case for honoring our \u2018sacred commitment \u2026 to equip those we send to war and take care of them and their families when they come home,\u2019 and as he reiterated that the last thing American veterans are is \u2018suckers\u2019 or \u2018losers.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the claim contradicts the
