{"id":31376,"date":"2024-05-08T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/05\/08\/senators-look-to-curb-va-plans-to-trim-employee-numbers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:14:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:14:57","slug":"senators-look-to-curb-va-plans-to-trim-employee-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/budget\/2024\/05\/08\/senators-look-to-curb-va-plans-to-trim-employee-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators wary of VA plans to trim employee numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senators worried about cutbacks in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs employee levels are asking appropriators to include safeguards against inadequate staffing in their plans for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/03\/11\/veterans-affairs-gets-13-budget-boost-under-white-house-fy25-request\/?contentQuery=%7B%22includeSections%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22excludeSections%22%3A%22%22%2C%22feedSize%22%3A10%2C%22feedOffset%22%3A45%7D&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" target=\"_blank\">department\u2019s budget next fiscal year.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a letter to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/06\/22\/spending-plan-for-vets-programs-gets-senate-support-but-fights-loom\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Appropriations Committee\u2019s leaders<\/a> on VA issues, a bipartisan group of 17 senators \u2014 led by Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and Angus King, I-Maine \u2014 asked for language in the upcoming budget measure that would require details on planned reductions in staffing and how that could impact service at department medical centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInconsistent staffing patterns put veterans\u2019 healthcare quality and accessibility at risk and redirect employees\u2019 attention from their defined job responsibilities to compensate for employment shortages,\u201d the senators wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their concerns stem from plans announced by VA earlier this spring to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/03\/12\/va-plans-to-trim-10000-jobs-this-year-mostly-from-medical-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\">trim department employee levels by 10,000 individuals<\/a> next fiscal year, mostly from medical posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2024\/03\/12\/va-plans-to-trim-10000-jobs-this-year-mostly-from-medical-sites\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1237664865.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA plans to trim 10,000 jobs this year, mostly from medical sites<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The White House&#039;s budget request for fiscal 2025 calls for a 2% reduction in the size of the Veterans Affairs workforce next year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/salute-veterans\/2023\/11\/08\/mcdonough-wants-va-to-reach-every-veteran-in-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough <\/a>has said repeatedly that the cuts will come from attrition \u2014 not layoffs \u2014 and should not have any impact on veterans\u2019 medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s not much different than traditional attrition,\u201d he told members of the Senate Appropriations Committee last week during a hearing on VA\u2019s fiscal 2025 budget request. \u201cHowever, because our retention is so high, and because [Congress] has been so generous to us with various pay enhancements, we have historically high retention, historically low quit rates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cuts would represent about 2% of the total VA employee count of more than 458,000, which is the largest total in department history. VA has seen significant additions in staffing in recent years, adding more than 82,000 workers to the payroll since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But lawmakers said they need more details in VA leadership\u2019s plans to draw down their employee end strength before supporting the move. They\u2019re requesting specifics on \u201croles delineated by facility, office, and position\u201d as well as overall evaluations about the impact of a smaller workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans across the country deserve better care and should not be subject to continuous appointment delays or lower-quality care due to these administrative issues,\u201d the senators wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate appropriators are expected to craft their plans for VA funding over the next few weeks, with the goal of final passage before the end of the current fiscal year on Oct. 1. The White House has requested $369.3 billion in funding for the department in fiscal year 2025, an increase of nearly 13% over current levels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VA
