{"id":31545,"date":"2025-01-24T15:05:43","date_gmt":"2025-01-24T15:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/01\/24\/va-places-60-staff-on-leave-after-shutting-down-dei-offices\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:15:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:15:34","slug":"va-places-60-staff-on-leave-after-shutting-down-dei-offices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2025\/01\/24\/va-places-60-staff-on-leave-after-shutting-down-dei-offices\/","title":{"rendered":"VA places 60 staff on leave after shutting down DEI offices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 60 Veterans Affairs employees have been placed on administrative leave following the closure of multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/01\/16\/multi-year-outreach-blitz-helped-bring-more-vets-into-va-services\/\" target=\"_blank\">diversity, equity and inclusion offices<\/a> across the department, part of a government-wide crackdown on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement to Military Times, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/01\/21\/va-secretary-nominee-promises-more-medical-care-options-and-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA officials<\/a> said that all department DEI offices are \u201cpermanently closed\u201d and that the workers on leave were solely focused on those inclusion policy efforts. They did not provide any additional information on when a decision will been made to reassign or fire those workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, acting VA Secretary Todd Hunter sent a staff-wide message announcing the closure of the offices in accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/01\/23\/more-than-300k-va-health-jobs-exempted-from-white-house-hiring-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\">White House guidance<\/a> earlier in the week. Similar messages were sent by other department heads, although Hunter\u2019s memo also included a line saying the \u201cprograms divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2025\/01\/23\/more-than-300k-va-health-jobs-exempted-from-white-house-hiring-freeze\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/25498317002_57fcb0a36c_o.jpg_06c5c3.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More than 300k VA health jobs exempted from White House hiring freeze<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About two-thirds of Veterans Affairs jobs will be excluded from a White House order blocking new hiring.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moves have left numerous department employees on edge. Internal department message boards, portions of which were shared with Military Times, have been peppered with fears about additional firings and other actions against individuals who worked on initiatives related to the closed offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time on those message boards, one employee pushed new administration leaders to go even further, asking for officials to roll back policies like requiring identifying pronouns from official emails and to punish staffers who championed those kinds of efforts during the last administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House has also set up a special effort to identify \u201cefforts by some in government to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language\u201d and is encouraging federal workers to report co-workers engaging in such behavior to administration officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, the program manager for VA\u2019s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (I-DEA) Influencers Network \u2014 responsible for a host of initiatives to bring more minority and LGBTQ+ veterans into the department\u2019s network \u2014 announced the shuttering of that office with a note stating, \u201cplease know that this transition does not diminish the value of your contributions or the importance of the work you have championed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Union officials have blasted the moves as unnecessary and potentially harmful to military readiness and veterans\u2019 access to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUndoing these programs is just another way for President Trump to undermine the merit-based civil service and turn federal hiring and firing decisions into loyalty tests,\u201d Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump has blasted the inclusion programs as divisive and harmful because of their focus on racial and cultural differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to closing DEI offices, VA websites containing information on past inclusion efforts have been deleted, and employees ordered to \u201cwithdraw any final or pending documents, directives, orders, materials, and equity plans issued by the agency\u201d related to the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department workforce is over 450,000 individuals, with around 90% of them working in health care posts or medical center support jobs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The moves come after a White House executive
