{"id":31565,"date":"2025-03-06T20:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-06T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/03\/06\/va-to-speed-up-health-records-system-rollout-with-new-sites-this-year\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:18:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:18:59","slug":"va-to-speed-up-health-records-system-rollout-with-new-sites-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2025\/03\/06\/va-to-speed-up-health-records-system-rollout-with-new-sites-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"VA to speed up health records system rollout, with new sites this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>EDITOR\u2019S NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect additional information from VA officials. <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials plan to rapidly accelerate the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/12\/20\/va-to-resume-new-electronic-health-record-rollout-in-mid-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\"> rollout of the department\u2019s new electronic health record system<\/a> this year, adding 13 new sites to the deployment schedule in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, department leaders had announced plans to resume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/04\/06\/va-delays-rollout-of-health-records-system-to-next-scheduled-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\">deployment of the controversial Oracle Cerner system<\/a> in mid-2026, with a few sites implementing training and software over the next 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/03\/06\/va-secretary-insists-massive-staff-cuts-needed-to-refocus-department\/\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Military Times this week<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/02\/24\/va-secretary-emphasizes-reforms-accountability-for-federal-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Doug Collins<\/a> called that schedule too short-sighted and slow. He promised quicker delivery on the pledge of a revamped health records system for patients and employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis has been a $10 billion project that\u2019s not going anywhere,\u201d Collins said. \u201cSo I\u2019m pleased to announce right now that we\u2019re moving forward on a new plan that is going to bring by next year double or almost triple the number of hospitals online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve worked through standardization. We\u2019ve got some plans now that, after almost two and a half years of nothing, we\u2019re now moving forward to get this project done. There\u2019s a lot going on here that I\u2019m excited about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2025\/03\/06\/va-secretary-insists-massive-staff-cuts-needed-to-refocus-department\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA secretary insists massive staff cuts needed to refocus department<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Secretary Doug Collins confirmed leaders are looking at trimming 80,000 workers to slim down the growing VA bureaucracy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday eveing, VA officials said that four sites in Michigan would go live with the new records system next year, as had been previously planned. Another nine sites will be added to that list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The health records overhaul project, launched by President Donald Trump in 2017, was designed to bring veterans\u2019 health records in line with military files for the first time. The project was originally scheduled to take 10 years and cost $16 billion. But nearly eight years later, only six of VA\u2019s 170-plus medical sites are using the software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because of repeated rollout challenges surrounding the software. Former VA Secretary Denis McDonough announced a full pause of the rollout in April 2023 after concerns from investigators and lawmakers over patient safety regarding lost or missing files from active patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staffers also complained to federal investigators about poor training, frequent system outages and lackluster support programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total cost of the program has already reached $16 billion, with outside advocates warning that figure could rise even higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, VA and Oracle officials testified to the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee two weeks ago that they were confident the program was back on track. They expressed optimism about the mid-2026 rollout plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins said since then, he has met with Oracle and VA leaders to push for a more aggressive schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re going to have to face me every week that they don\u2019t get it done,\u201d he said. \u201cOur folks are going to understand that we have to do our part in the contract, and Oracle understands that they want to do the best job they can on their end of the contract.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said they are \u201cis pursuing a market-based approach to site selection for its deployments going forward\u201d but did not same any specific locations beyond the Michigan sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins said he is confident that VA staffers will be able to get the right training and preparation ahead of any new sites being brought online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the problem was that we didn\u2019t have enough leadership to say, \u2018Let\u2019s bring you two together and actually do it,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI talk to people. I\u2019m not management by email. I\u2019m management by talking to you. I\u2019m management by hearing from folks. And leadership is about setting a vision, saying this will get fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins\u2019 pledge comes as VA is reviewing its entire workforce organization, with a goal of reducing staffing by roughly 80,000 employees this year. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have warned that trying to install the new records system without sufficient support staff could result in employee frustration and patient safety
