Similar appearances from other Cabinet officials are expected throughout the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/01\/13\/new-senate-vet-affairs-chair-plans-focus-on-care-access-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Jerry Moran<\/a> said that Collins \u201cwill testify before the committee to lay out the department\u2019s plans for improving the VA over the next four years and providing quality and timely care and benefits to our nation\u2019s heroes and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will be an opportunity for members of the committee to ask questions about recent and planned changes underway at VA and for our committee to receive an overview of the secretary\u2019s goals and priorities three months after his bipartisan confirmation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2025\/04\/17\/nurses-rally-outside-va-hospitals-to-highlight-staff-cuts-vacancies\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/54416175838_dfb36b3eec_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Nurses rally outside VA hospitals to highlight staff cuts, vacancies<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA nurses across the U.S. are protesting Trump administration moves that they say endanger the health of veterans and federal workers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since that bipartisan confirmation vote in February, several Democratic senators have publicly disavowed their support for Collins and demanded he return to Capitol Hill to answer for rumored and promised changes at VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those plans include tens of thousands of potential jobs cuts in coming months, as well as significantly restructuring support contracts across the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, Collins\u2019 announcements that VA will end nearly all support services for transgender veterans and eliminate diversity and inclusion programs across the workforce have drawn anger and ire from Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, Collins has struck back on social media, accusing critics of fear-mongering and maintaining the status quo in the face of mounting problems with the VA bureaucracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, the VA secretary makes appearances before each chamber\u2019s appropriations and oversight committees each spring as lawmakers negotiate the annual federal spending plan. Collins was scheduled to appear before the House Appropriations Committee earlier this month, but lawmakers postponed that event because of other legislative
