{"id":32166,"date":"2023-09-19T21:20:23","date_gmt":"2023-09-19T21:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/09\/19\/us-sanctions-firms-in-china-russia-turkey-over-irans-drone-program\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:42:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:42:22","slug":"us-sanctions-firms-in-china-russia-turkey-over-irans-drone-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2023\/09\/19\/us-sanctions-firms-in-china-russia-turkey-over-irans-drone-program\/","title":{"rendered":"US sanctions firms in China , Russia, Turkey over Iran\u2019s drone program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. on Tuesday imposed sanctions on seven people and four companies in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/china\">China<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/russia\">Russia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/turkey\">Turkey<\/a> who officials allege are connected with the development of Iran\u2019s drone program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. accuses Iran of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-iran-politics-defense-intelligence-agency-drones-fecf53c964f09e24bd9a187715ac8598\">supplying Russia<\/a> with drones used to bomb Ukrainian civilians as the Kremlin continues <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/russia-ukraine\">its invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest development comes after Iran\u2019s President Ebrahim Raisi <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-raisi-ukraine-united-nations-5e196ef81249ca3ea8a12f5148f6d867\">denied his country had sent drones<\/a> to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are against the war in Ukraine,\u201d President Raisi said Monday as he met with media executives on the sidelines of the world\u2019s premier global conference, the high-level leaders\u2019 meeting at the U.N. General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parties sanctioned Tuesday by Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control include: An Iranian drone company previously sanctioned in 2008, now doing business as Shahin Co., its managing executives, a group of Russian parts manufacturers and two Turkish money exchangers, Mehmet Tokdemir and Alaaddin Aykut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treasury said the action builds on a set of sanctions it <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-sanctions-united-states-treasury-b8b1c6efe46ebc876ee63bf72ab028c5\">issued last March,<\/a> when Treasury sanctioned 39 firms linked to an alleged shadow banking system that helped to obfuscate financial activity between sanctioned Iranian firms and their foreign buyers, namely for petrochemicals produced in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brian E. Nelson, Treasury\u2019s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said Iran\u2019s \u201ccontinued, deliberate proliferation\u201d of its drone program enables Russia \u201cand other destabilizing actors to undermine global stability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States will continue to take action\u201d against Iran\u2019s drone program, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the State Department, said the U.S. \u201cwill continue to use every tool at our disposal to disrupt these efforts and will work with Allies and partners to hold Iran accountable for its actions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other things, the sanctions deny the people and firms access to any property or financial assets held in the U.S. and prevent U.S. companies and citizens from doing business with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tensions between the U.S. and Iran
