{"id":33022,"date":"2018-03-05T21:43:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T21:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/05\/lockheed-to-reinvest-some-tax-savings-in-rd-education\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:38:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:38:33","slug":"lockheed-to-reinvest-some-tax-savings-in-rd-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/govcon\/2018\/03\/05\/lockheed-to-reinvest-some-tax-savings-in-rd-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed to reinvest some tax savings in R&#038;D, education"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The world\u2019s largest defense contractor is looking to reinvest some of its savings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/budget\/2017\/11\/09\/a-national-security-case-for-tax-reform-commentary\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s tax cuts<\/a> into research and development as well as internal education funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson pledged during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2018\/03\/05\/lockheed-ceo-plays-down-impact-of-trumps-steel-tariff\/\">media event Monday<\/a> that the \u201clandmark\u201d tax cut legislation would have \u201ca significant positive impact on our corporation.\u201d The tax bill was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/budget\/2017\/11\/29\/will-tax-reform-hurt-trumps-military-buildup-gop-defense-hawks-are-shrugging-it-off\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">signed into law<\/a> by Trump in December, with large companies such as Lockheed expected to greatly benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tax funds will increase \u201cinvestment in research and development and capital expenditures by a combined $200 million,\u201d Hewson said, while also pledging to increase funding for Lockheed\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2017\/03\/09\/skunkworks-sikorsky-and-skinny-jeans-lockheed-goes-to-south-by-southwest\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Ventures investment fund<\/a> by an unstated amount. The Ventures fund is used to invest in high-tech firms outside of Lockheed\u2019s core business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reinvestment of tax savings will also be used to expand \u201ceducation offerings and worker training,\u201d as well as an expansion of a program designed to assist employees with tuition for higher education, the CEO added. It will also increase corporate giving toward science, technology, engineering and mathematics education programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is unclear exactly how much money Lockheed will have saved through the tax legislation, but analyst Byron Callan of Capitol Alpha Partners estimates the company will gain at least $500-$600 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s possible some or all of those moves were already underway before the tax bill was passed, Lockheed\u2019s senior vice president of government affairs stressed they were a direct result of the new legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is all new. We have been going through a very deliberate, focused, internal discussion about, now that this is reality, and it actually began before the actual bill passed, as to what opportunities does this present,\u201d Robert Rangel said. \u201cCertainly the Venture fund, the increased capitol expenditures, some of our plans to accelerate STEM funding, etc., all of that is new and additive, not something that we already planned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rangel also described the increase for the Ventures fund as being \u201csignificant, relative to where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither Hewson nor Rangel spelled out where the R&amp;D investments would be going, but the company CEO did highlight four technology sectors that the company would be looking to beef up in the coming years: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2018\/03\/02\/as-putin-touts-hypersonic-weapons-america-prepares-its-own-arsenal-will-it-be-in-time\/\">hypersonic weapons<\/a>, lasers, artificial intelligence and electronic warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the amount of funding for the R&amp;D boost, those funds will likely improve, rather than transform, the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/show-reporter\/ausa\/2017\/10\/19\/inside-the-foundational-future-technologies-of-the-worlds-largest-defense-company\/\">previous investments<\/a>
