{"id":33300,"date":"2023-03-06T18:44:22","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T18:44:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/03\/06\/lockheed-martin-resumes-f-35-flights-with-engine-vibration-fix-in-hand\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:51:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:51:27","slug":"lockheed-martin-resumes-f-35-flights-with-engine-vibration-fix-in-hand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/govcon\/2023\/03\/06\/lockheed-martin-resumes-f-35-flights-with-engine-vibration-fix-in-hand\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed Martin resumes F-35 flights with engine vibration fix in hand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s note: The F-35 Joint Program Office announced March 14 that it and the Defense Contract Management Agency had resumed accepting F-35s from Lockheed Martin.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Lockheed Martin on Monday morning resumed conducting acceptance flights of newly built F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, nearly three months after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/03\/02\/pentagon-orders-engine-vibration-fix-for-entire-f-35-fleet-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\">engine problem grounded new jets<\/a> and halted deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed announced Monday that the first flight took off from Fort Worth, Texas, where it builds the majority of F-35 fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe resumed F-35 production flight operations today following an F135 engine mitigation action,\u201d Lockheed Martin said in its statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed stopped acceptance flights after a Dec. 15 mishap involving an F-35B fighter that was undergoing a quality check flight. A video showed the fighter bouncing on the ground, tipping forward and spinning before the pilot safely ejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation that ensued found signs of a problem with the fighter\u2019s Pratt &amp; Whitney-made F135 engine, and engine deliveries were halted in late December. Further investigation found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/02\/10\/fix-coming-for-f-35-engine-problem-that-froze-fighters-deliveries\/\" target=\"_blank\">the engine had vibration issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pratt &amp; Whitney as well as engineers from the Pentagon and Lockheed developed a solution to fix the vibration issue in the engine, the F-35 Joint Program Office announced in February. That solution takes about four to eight hours to install in the engines of F-35s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pratt &amp; Whitney, which is owned by Raytheon Technologies, and the JPO said in February that the vibration problem was rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the office issued an order March 1 that said all F-35s should have this vibration fix installed within 90 days because the solution is \u201cinexpensive [and] non-intrusive,\u201d and would mean all F-35 engines have the same configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acceptance flights are required before the government can take delivery of new F-35s. The resumption of acceptance flights will also pave the way for deliveries to resume, though Lockheed did not say when deliveries might resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSafety remains our top priority,\u201d Lockheed said. \u201cWe will deliver the aircraft as quickly as possible after undertaking the multiple checks and test flights
