{"id":33339,"date":"2023-02-24T18:44:49","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T18:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/24\/pentagon-approves-f-35-engine-deliveries-after-vibration-fix\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:46:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:46:43","slug":"pentagon-approves-f-35-engine-deliveries-after-vibration-fix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/govcon\/2023\/02\/24\/pentagon-approves-f-35-engine-deliveries-after-vibration-fix\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon approves F-35 engine deliveries after vibration fix"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The F-35 Joint Program Office cleared Raytheon\u2019s Pratt &amp; Whitney unit to resume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/01\/04\/new-f-35-engine-deliveries-suspended-amid-ongoing-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\">delivering F135 engines<\/a> for new Joint Strike Fighters, two months after deliveries were halted following a mishap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineers with the company and other organizations developed a solution to mitigate \u201ca rare system phenomenon involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/02\/10\/fix-coming-for-f-35-engine-problem-that-froze-fighters-deliveries\/\" target=\"_blank\">harmonic resonance\u201d in the engines<\/a>, which is expected to clear the way for newly-built F-35s and other affected fighters to fly again, the JPO said in a statement Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the newer fighters are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/12\/27\/pentagon-grounds-small-group-of-f-35s-after-ejection-on-texas-runway\/\" target=\"_blank\">not yet allowed to fly<\/a>, which means a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/12\/30\/f-35-deliveries-halted-after-texas-mishap-new-contract-finalized\/\" target=\"_blank\">halt in F-35 deliveries<\/a> is still in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government is currently working to provide instructions to the fleet and to Lockheed Martin to enable safe resumption of flight operations of impacted aircraft and new production aircraft,\u201d the JPO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A source familiar with the program told Defense News flight operations could resume in one to two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesperson for Raytheon, which owns Pratt &amp; Whitney, sent an email to reporters with the JPO\u2019s statement, but the company did not release its own statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most F-35s are built in Lockheed\u2019s main facility in Fort Worth, Texas. Before Lockheed can deliver them to the government, the fighters must be tested in acceptance flights to ensure they are working as intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Dec. 15, a new F-35B undergoing a quality check flight for the Defense Contract Management Agency experienced an issue that led to its Air Force pilot to eject. The fighter first hovered, then descended and bounced on the ground. It then tipped forward until its nose and a wing touched the ground and started to spin around, at which point the pilot ejected. safely<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed immediately halted acceptance flights, which had the effect of shutting down deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Dec. 27, the JPO said engine deliveries were paused after what it called a \u201cmutual agreement\u201d between itself, DCMA, and Pratt &amp; Whitney while the investigation continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Feb. 9 interview, Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va., told Defense News that engineers identified vibration issues in the F135 engine as the source of the problem, and that a solution to dampen those vibrations had been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JPO said Friday that engine maker Pratt &amp; Whitney, along with engineers from the JPO, Lockheed Martin, Naval Air Systems Command and the Air Force Lifecycle Management Center, had worked since December to find ways to mitigate the harmonic resonance problem in the F135 engine, and find a way to safely fly with the engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe actions the government and industry team are taking will ensure incorporation of mitigation measures that will fully address\/resolve this rare phenomenon in impacted F135 engines,\u201d the JPO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initial assessments in the F-35B mishap investigation found a high-pressure fuel tube had failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement to Defense News this month, Jen Latka, vice president of the F135 program for Pratt &amp; Whitney, said a \u201cthorough review\u201d had found no quality issues with that fractured fuel tube, and that a rare \u201charmonic resonance\u201d problem was to blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JPO grounded what it described as a small number of F-35s, which it said were at a higher risk of suffering an engine problem, after the Dec. 15 F-35B incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed continues to build new F-35s. Those fighters are being stored at Fort Worth until they can be flown and delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Feb. 10, Lockheed said it had 17 completed F-35s awaiting
