{"id":9393,"date":"2018-10-15T18:47:44","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T18:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/15\/nasa-x-ray-space-telescope-back-online-after-brief-shutdown\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:02:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:02:12","slug":"nasa-x-ray-space-telescope-back-online-after-brief-shutdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/newsletters\/acquisition-update\/2018\/10\/15\/nasa-x-ray-space-telescope-back-online-after-brief-shutdown\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA X-ray Space Telescope back online after brief shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. \u2014 One of NASA\u2019s space telescopes is back in business after a two-day shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA said Monday that the <a href=\"http:\/\/chandra.harvard.edu\/\">Chandra X-ray Observatory<\/a> came back online Friday. Chandra&#8217;s trouble occurred less than a week after the Hubble Space Telescope was sidelined. In both cases, the problem was in the pointing system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials say a glitch in one of Chandra\u2019s gyroscopes generated three seconds of bad computer data last Wednesday. That was enough for the 19-year-old telescope to go into so-called safe mode, during which science observations cease. Flight controllers restored Chandra\u2019s pointing by switching to a backup gyroscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Observations are expected to resume with Chandra by the end of this week. Hubble, meanwhile, remains out of action with a more serious gyroscope issue that cropped up Oct. 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what does the telescope do?
