This reality is underscored by a presidential election cycle that has included more than its fair share of cyber intrigue. <br\/><br\/> It&#8217;s now become clear that most Americans need more education when it comes to cybersecurity. In fact, there&#8217;s new evidence that perhaps digital natives, or our youngest internet users, have a better grasp on the urgency of the cyber challenge our nation faces than their parents&#8217; generation.<br\/><br\/> Despite the recent prominent cybersecurity headlines and conversations coming from the political stage, the majority of U.S. young adults say cybersecurity has not been a big enough part of the discussion leading up to the presidential election. According to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.raytheoncyber.com\/news\/feature\/2016_cyber_survey.html\" target=\"_blank\">new survey<\/a>\u00a0of 18- to 26-year-olds conducted in partnership with the National Cyber Security Alliance, a candidate&#8217;s position on cybersecurity will directly impact the millennial vote. <br\/><br\/> Millennials also expressed concern about socially and politically motivated cyber hacktivism as a threat to our safety. They say hacktivism shines a bright light on the need for better cybersecurity and more cyber talent.<br\/><br\/> As cyber becomes even more tightly woven into the fabric of our national security, the rising demand for cyber talent will continue to outpace the growth of our cyber workforce, leaving a gap that must be filled. If cyberwar were to break out it would take place on our commercial and civilian government&#8217;s networks, not just the military&#8217;s. We must ensure our nation is properly resourced for the cyber threats of tomorrow. <br\/><br\/> Technology is clearly part of the answer; but continuing to focus on skilled talent is vital.<br\/><br\/> Senior Director of Cybersecurity Policy for the National Security Council Andy Grotto puts the federal government&#8217;s cyber professional shortage at 10,000. While that&#8217;s a big number, here&#8217;s an even bigger one to consider: Nearly 210,000 cybersecurity jobs in the U.S. went unfilled last year and job postings increased 74 percent over the past five years, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peninsulapress.com\/2015\/03\/31\/cybersecurity-jobs-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>. This trend shows no sign of slowing. In fact, the demand for security professionals is expected to increase by 53 percent through 2018.<br\/><br\/> As industry leaders, we need to understand the causal factors and necessary work to reverse this trend. Worldwide, 40 percent of young men, but only 28 percent of young women received advice about cyber careers from teachers or counselors in high school, our survey revealed. Women (38 percent) are more likely than men (25 percent) to believe that activities encouraging cybersecurity as a career choice are not available to them. Striving for gender parity in the field of cybersecurity would go a long way toward reinforcing our defenses, while addressing obvious concerns about fairness and equality in both our educational institutions and our U.S. workforce.<br\/><br\/> Secondly, we must ensure good social governance for our educators and parents as cybersecurity topics are introduced to students. There is a tremendous opportunity for industry and business leaders to partner with and to help protect our local communities. It is the responsibility of those with the exposure and expertise in the cybersecurity field, who best understand the critical challenge our nation faces, to act with urgency in solving this talent shortfall.<br\/><br\/> Finally, we need to prove commitment with our financial resources by investing in the development of the cyber workforce. While many companies have funded scholarships, competitions and ongoing classroom engagement to help grow cyber talent and interest in related careers, there is much more to do to stimulate growth of our cyber talent pipeline.<br\/><br\/> I encourage employers, educators and parents to take their own steps to cultivate a cyber workforce capable of securing our nation and our economy in this globally connected world.
