{"id":9675,"date":"2015-12-04T19:00:13","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T19:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/12\/04\/with-new-year-comes-new-cloud-security-standards\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:10:14","slug":"with-new-year-comes-new-cloud-security-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/cloud\/2015\/12\/04\/with-new-year-comes-new-cloud-security-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"With new year comes new cloud security standards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Institute of Standards and Technology issued the fourth generation of its cloud security controls guidelines more than two years ago but cloud service providers seeking authority to operate in the federal sector haven&#8217;t had to meet those standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That all changes on Jan. 1, as the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) officially makes the transition from Revision 3 to Revision 4 of the <em>Privacy Controls for Federal Information Systems and Organizations<\/em> (SP 800-53).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting in the new year, the FedRAMP program office \u2014 including the Joint Authorization Board and ATOs submitted through agencies \u2014 will only accept documentation proving a CSPs ability to meet Rev4 standards. This includes new authorizations, as well as annual assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FedRAMP program office is easing the shift by offering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fedramp.gov\/files\/2015\/01\/FedRAMP-Rev-4-Transition-Guide-v3-0.pdf\">transition guide<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fedramp.gov\/files\/2015\/01\/FedRAMP-Rev3-to-Rev-4-Annual-Assessment-Controls-Template-v2-0.xlsx\">templates<\/a> to help CSPs realign their documentation. The guide was finalized in June 2014, giving CSPs 18 months to make the transition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cloud providers have to finalize transition to NIST Rev4
