BISMARCK, N.D. — Closing arguments have been made in the trial for a former U.S. Marine Corps recruiter charged with setting several small fires at his workplace in Bismarck.
Anthony Degroot was charged in federal court with arson in connection with a fire at the armed forces recruiting station in late December 2013. He pleaded not guilty in October.
A prosecutor said Thursday that evidence shows Degroot didn’t suffer from any injuries despite saying he was hit in the head and left inside the station after the fires were started. But his defense attorney said the first officer on the scene wasn’t able to find Degroot’s pulse.
KXMC-TV reports Degroot claims he crawled out of the building while his mouth and wrists were duct taped.
