The rescue took place Saturday, roughly three miles off the Marine base. The civilians rescued were in danger due to rising waters because of continuing effects from Tropical Storm Florence.

Onslow County’s Emergency Operations Center took full advantage of the branch that has specialized in amphibious operations since 1775. According to a Marine Corps press release, the call from Onslow County went directly to Camp Lejeune’s Security and Emergency Operations Center for a request for support.

After completion of the rescue, the civilians were transported to the Piney Green Volunteer Fire Department.

Rescue assistance by base commanders was recently authorized by Secretary of Defense James Mattis during a media briefing on storm preparations.

Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Robert B. Neller took to Twitter to remind the local community that the Marines are assisting in evacuations, as well as to inform those Marines that chose to evacuate the area to not return to base until Sept. 24.

According to the Marines, the county is requesting additional support from the base. The Marine Corps has reported that they will be moving to support these requests for aid.

Last week, retired Marine Jason Weinmann, 47, was using an old “deuce and a half” military transport truck he bought at an auction to rescue people from flooded homes, according to reporting by CNN. Weinmann, is quoted by CNN as saying, “that’s why I got this thing, to use in times like this.”

According to The Daily Beast, these trials were computer simulations that are the precursor to what could lead to robotics that are controlled by the mind of a human operator.

The Military Times asked DARPA for comment regarding the experiment. An email from a spokesman from DARPA was able to shed light on the experiment, seemingly fit for science fiction.

“Using a bidirectional neural interface, a volunteer on the program named Nathan Copeland was able to simultaneously steer a simulated lead aircraft (a Mooney Bravo) and maintain formation of two, simulated unmanned support aircraft in a flight simulator. The support aircraft did not represent real UAV models but were instead open-source designs downloaded by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab and based loosely on fictional aircraft from the Macross/Robotech series.”

The idea of using a human’s thoughts to control drones is only a few years old. In 2015, CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr moderated a taped conference with Dr. Arati Prabhakar, the DARPA director at the time, regarding the subject of “how will technology shape the future of war.”

During this discussion DARPA announced that a volunteer had flown a simulated F-35.

So far, both volunteers of the tests live with a degree of paralysis. According to DARPA, each individual had to undergo surgery to place electrodes in their brain to successfully complete a neural interface. However, DARPA has plans to be able to create the interface without the surgery.

“DARPA launched a program called Next-Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology (N3) to pursue such technology. Research is not yet underway, but once it is, there will be significant technological and scientific hurdles to overcome. If we are successful, one of the requirements of the program is to demonstrate use of a nonsurgical neural interface system to complete a militarily relevant task such as neural control of an unmanned aerial vehicle.”

Last month, a request by the State Department to send a Marine detachment to a new American Institute in Taiwan was denied by Mattis, according reporting by CNN. A unnamed defense official has told CNN that the Marines were assumed to be arriving in Taiwan in October.

The new American facility, located just outside of the capital of Taipei, will be able to house 450 people, according to the AIT website.

State Department officials did not comment to CNN on the specifics regarding the decision.

This denial ultimately comes at time when affairs between the U.S. and China are rocky.

The U.S. government does not officially recognize Taiwan as a country. This is due to the “One China Policy,” dating back to the early 1970s. China maintains ceremonial rule over Taiwan. However, the U.S. has had an established “de facto American embassy,” since 1979.

The security requirement for AIT will likely be augmented like other de facto embassies or similar unofficial U.S. diplomatic outposts. This is a similar situation to the use of private contractors in the Middle East and Africa, according to CNN.

According to a State Department website, the agency does not does take any type of responsibility for the personnel employed by a list of several security companies that are used by the Department of State for security purposes.

The combined force effort was used to 3D print a 500-square-foot barracks hut.

“This exercise had never been done before,” Additive Manufacturing’s project officer Capt. Matthew Friedell said in a news release. “People have printed buildings and large structures, but they haven’t done it onsite and all at once. This is the first-in-the-world, onsite continuous concrete print.”

According to the Marine Corps, the team used a design model on an old computer, concrete and a 3D printer. The concrete was then put through the 3D printer. It took approximately 40 hours to complete the barracks hut.

Friedell said that, “if there was a robot to do the mixing and pumping, the building could easily be created in one day.”

According to estimates by the Marines, it normally takes up to five days and 10 Marines to construct a barracks room out of wood.

“In 2016, the commandant said robots should be doing everything that is dull, dangerous and dirty, and a construction site on the battlefield is all of those things,” Friedell said in the release.

The Marines are commonly the first to respond to communities that have experienced a natural or humanitarian disaster.

“This capability would enable a great partnership with the local community because it is low cost, easy to use, and robotics could print the buildings,” Friedell said in the news release.

To add more incremental costs to the F-35B aircraft, the Marine Corps is having to invest in portable lighting rods to help protect the aircraft while it is parked on the tarmac.

According to a Marine Corps justification memorandum, “The F-35B as a composite type aircraft does not provide inherent passive lightning protection.”

The Automated Logistics Information System is essentially the F-35B’s computerized brain. This system is integral to the functioning capability of the aircraft. Due to the automated electronics associated with this system, it needs to be protected against the threat of lighting.

The implementation of lightning protection is standard operation procedure, Capt. Christopher Harrison, a spokesman for the Marine Corps, told Marine Corps Times in an email.

“Iwakuni already has permanent lightning protection installed on all aircraft sun shelters in order to protect both Marines and aircraft.”

“To be clear, lightning protection is widely considered a best practice for all flight line operations and is an essential safeguard for all aircraft, not just the F-35. Procuring portable lightning rods simply provides a reliable, cost-effective precautionary measure to protect the aircraft when they are located elsewhere on the flight line.”

Like all aircraft, the F-35B has a fuel tank. Even grounded, the F-35B lacks any type of inherent lighting strike protection. A simple equation for disaster is fuel vapors, oxygen and a lightning strike could equate to a nonfunctioning aircraft.

The use of lightning rod on an airfield, “protects aircraft 24/7 when parked in open, austere, and lightning conditions are forecasted/exists,” according to a Marine Corps justification document.

The F35s in Japan are a part of the inaugural deployment of the new air platform.

His story went viral, but Johnny Bobbitt Jr. is said to be homeless again, and claims he hasn’t received the money allocated for him from Kate McClure and her boyfriend, despite being the subject of a $402,000 GoFundMe campaign they started for him.

A story that should have ended happily has now turned into a raging battle between lawyers and investigations of the possible mismanagement of funds.

According to CBS reporting, Kate McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, allegedly have control over the funds. They are accused of using funds for vacations, a new BMW, and a helicopter ride viewing the Grand Canyon.

In October 2017, Bobbitt had brought McClure a canister of gas in a selfless act of kindness. McClure and D’Amico said they were inspired by Bobbitt’s act and decided to “pay it forward” by starting a GoFundMe account for him.

Chris Fallon, Bobbitt’s lawyer, told CNN, “From what I can see, the GoFundMe account raised $402,000 and GoFundMe charged a fee of approximately $30,000. Mark D’Amico and Kate McClure gave Johnny about $75,000. There should be close to another $300,000 available to Johnny.”

That $300,000 is not available to Bobbitt, though.

D’Amico admitted to the Inquirer that he used $500 from the account to gamble, but repaid the money “quickly.” But they are accused of gambling away more of the money.

Bobbitt, an admitted drug addict, bought a camper (he reportedly was promised a house) and a used vehicle with the money. However, the vehicle has since broken down.

McClure told The Philadelphia Inquirer the couple is withholding the rest of Bobbitt’s money until he is drug free. The couple has not yet responded publicly to the allegations.

The crowdfunding website GoFundMe is also involved, investigating the management of the funds. If the mismanagement claims prove to be true, it would be the biggest case of GoFundMe fraud seen by whistleblower group GoFraudMe, according the Washington Post.

“When there is a dispute, we work with all parties involved to ensure funds go to the right place,” GoFundMe’s statement read. “We will work to ensure that Johnny receives the help he deserves and that the donors’ intentions are honored.”

In the meantime, though, Bobbitt is assumed to be back to where he began before meeting McClure.

Jacqueline Promislo, another legal representative for Bobbitt, told CNN that he is currently living on the streets of Philadelphia.

In 2013, combat veteran Adam Gonzales found himself in anguish every morning as he sat in his truck in the parking lot before work.

“I am now a slave here in America,” Gonzalez, now 38, remembers thinking about that slightly more-than-minimum-wage job in Chicago.

But in that struggle, Gonzalez found inspiration to help his fellow vets.

Gonzalez and his wife Susan, who is also a veteran, are the founders of Silent Professionals, an online job board specializing in connecting combat veterans with employers in the global private security sector.

“We understand that it can be hard to find job opportunities suited for your unique skill set, because at Silent Professionals, we’ve all been there,” the Silent Professionals job page reads.

A former Army infantryman, Adam left the military in 2004 after four years of service. He transitioned easily into the private security world.

For almost a decade following his discharge, Adam built an extensive global security resume. He operated in high-paying contract positions across multiple countries. He was entrusted with protecting executives and diplomats, such as former American diplomat Paul Bremmer. He also provided direct support of military combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But in 2012, Adam experienced a close call that convinced him to quit contracting and try working “a normal guy job.”

“A rocket hit the hut that I was living in while I was working in Afghanistan. I was not in it, but I figure that this must be a sign,” said Adam.

This transition was not easy.

“After so many years spent overseas, I had no network in the US. I knew no one,” he said.

Adam questioned why he spent so much time overseas and whether it was worthwhile.

In 2014, he moved to Texas and began working in stateside executive protection, providing security for oil and gas bigwigs and occasionally celebrities, including rap artist Lil Wayne.

Soon after, Adam met Susan, a former military intelligence officer working as a civilian in the oil and gas sector.

The two would ultimately marry — and realize that they could merge their expertise to create a new kind of employment outlet for veterans.

Silent Professionals helps veterans who have combat-related military occupational specialties in multiple ways. The site translates vet resumes into a language that civilian employers can understand. Its job board includes openings across a wide range of security-oriented roles, as well as jobs in logistics, administration and other areas. Registration and access to the entire site are free for military and law enforcement veterans.

“We get good people to jobs that are in need of being filled,” said Susan.

Since the website went live in July 2017, Silent Professionals has connected more than 1,200 veterans with positions abroad and in the US. Their placement rate is growing monthly, according to Susan, who handles the site’s data analytics. She also leverages her corporate experience to expand Silent Professionals’ employer catalog.

Starting the job portal has brought Adam happiness and a sense of purpose, Susan said.

“The job is also therapy for him. It makes him happy when he can find someone employment, because he knows what it’s like to be underutilized,” she said.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Africa Command confirmed to Task and Purpose that on Feb. 28, 2017, during a three-day mission to train, advise and assist partner forces, a Marine Special Operations team engaged al-Qaida enemy fighters.

Two Raiders were awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a valorous device following that incident.

Partner forces initially engaged and killed one al-Qaida fighter with small arms fire before calling for helicopter support. Militants then attempted to flank the Marines and partner forces from the rear, leading the Marines to return fire in self-defense, Africa Command spokeswoman Samantha Reho said in a statement to Task and Purpose.

According to award citations, one Raider “provided critical communications relay and ensured proper positioning of partner force elements.” The second Raider engaged militants from a helicopter platform as well as coordinated close-air support along with the directing gunners and pilots for support. This Raider also accompanied the helicopter during a casualty evacuation of two separate wounded Raiders and coordinated two resupply operations throughout the course of the day.

The Marine Corps had previously trained with Army Special Operations in Germany in preparation for operations in Africa.

Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said that there are roughly 6,000 U.S. troops across 53 countries in Africa, according to earlier Military Times reporting.

The names of the Raiders and the African country have not been released due to the classified nature of the operations.

But his parents and his six siblings firmly believe he is still alive, and their optimism is shared by Reporters Without Borders, a number of news organizations with ties to Tice and the U.S. government.

Tice disappeared in Darayya, Syria, near Damascus, in August 2012 after being detained at a checkpoint. During his summer break before his final year at Georgetown University Law School he was working as a freelance journalist, telling the story of the civil war from the perspective of ordinary Syrian residents. He filed award-winning stories for CBS News, McClatchy Newspapers, the Washington Post and other media outlets.

In September 2012, a short proof-of-life video was released of Tice in captivity, blindfolded and bound, as armed men led him down a mountain path. But it’s never been clear whether he’s being held by forces backing President Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian government itself, or some other group.

His parents, Mark and Debra Tice, have long been working to secure his release and to keep his captivity in the public eye. During an appearance on NBC’s “The Today Show” Aug. 14, they reiterated their belief that he is still alive, and said they have met with officials in the White House and at the State Department who share that sentiment.

Tice’s family and friends joined media colleagues at the National Press Club Tuesday evening to mark the anniversary of his disappearance. The event featured an exhibit of photos that he had taken of children in Syria.

“Six years after his disappearance, we are reminded of the dangers reporters endure in order to shed light on the dark corners of the world, uncovering truth others would rather keep hidden,” Fred Ryan, publisher of The Washington Post and a speaker at the anniversary event, told Stars and Stripes prior to the event. “This global tragedy has caused an unimaginable amount of pain for Austin’s friends and family, particularly his parents, who have been relentless in their focus on his return. It is time for him to be released without further delay.”

The FBI has posted on its website a $1 million reward “for information that leads directly to the safe location, recovery and return of Austin Bennett Tice.”

It’s found in mugs on messy workstations, in the hands of a sailor half-asleep just off of watch and brewed in chow halls all over the globe.

It’s coffee.

“If the Taliban or al-Qaida ever poisoned the coffee supply, the entire military would be combat ineffective in less than a day,” Richard Siemion, a former Army infantry officer and combat veteran, joked in an interview with Military Times.

While Siemion’s analysis is based off no actual research, his observation, as one who spent seven years in uniform, speaks to the importance of the liquid fuel as the life blood of every military branch.

Looking back through history, coffee’s importance to American and military culture becomes abundantly clear.

After the Boston Tea Party in 1773, Americans began drinking java more often because consuming tea, the drink of the enemy at the time, was considered un-American. The military, however, didn’t completely embrace its need for caffeine until the Civil War.

Coffee’s importance to morale was noted by Union cavalryman Ebenezer Nelson Gilpin, who wrote in a April 1865 diary entry that life without coffee was unbearable.

“Everything is chaos here,” he wrote. “We are reduced to quarter rations and no coffee… and nobody can soldier without coffee.”

Even eventual-President William McKinley was taught an important lesson while in making sure the Union fighting man was adequately caffeinated when, as a 19-year-old, McKinley delivered hot coffee to front-line soldiers.

Also of historical note is that the Navy coined one of the more well-known nicknames for the beverage after President Woodrow Wilson’s Navy secretary, Josephus Daniels, banned alcohol onboard ships at the outbreak of World War I.

Coffee stepped in to fill the void left by the much-preferred booze, and though the origin is disputed, old salts say that sailors, who were not exactly pleased with having their spirits taken away, referred to the replacement as a “cup of Joseph” in honor of Josephus, which was then shortened to “cup of Joe.”

These many years later, recognizing a service member’s caffeine intake remains just as important.

The Army Medical Research and Material Command recently developed the 2B-Alert Personalized Alertness and Cognitive Performance mobile app so soldiers could individually calculate when and how much caffeine to consume for maximum effectiveness.

Which brand is consumed most, though, is the real question.

While the Department of Defense is unable to provide statistical data of coffee consumption by brand per service member, an independent Military Times investigation uncovered some answers, starting with information from the Defense Logistics Agency, or DLA.

The DLA is a “logistics combat support agency, providing worldwide logistics support in both peacetime and wartime to the military services as well as several civilian agencies and foreign countries,” the agency’s website states. In short, the DLA connects with the coffee vendors that wind up supplying military installations.

With data obtained from the DLA, rankings were compiled showing which CONUS locations received the most coffee during fiscal year 2018. Rank is determined by the total pounds of coffee received, with number one being the greatest amount.

It terms of what brands occupy the biggest corner of the military’s coffee distribution throughout CONUS, Maxwell House and S&D sit atop the rest. Overseas, Maxwell House distributes primarily to Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Southern Europe, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Djibouti and Kenya, while S&D remains the most popular in Afghanistan.

Coffee options in MREs, meanwhile, are limited.

According to Michael Tuttle, a representative of DLA, the coffee in MREs is “determined by the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center when they develop the MRE and the contents. Traditionally, MREs have contained Folgers coffee packages, but that’s not due to service members requesting Folgers.”

Individual branches of the military have some determination in deciding what brands of coffee they distribute to their men and women in uniform. However, the selection options come from the DLA.

Ben Benson of the Naval Supply Systems Command discussed the typical coffee rotation for sailors.

“For galleys ashore and afloat, common brands served in our galleys include Sara Lee, Maxwell House, Starbucks, Joffrey and Georgia, a Japanese brand provided on the carrier Ronald Reagan,” he said.

Navy Exchanges provide an array of brand options, including bagged coffee led primarily by Folgers, North Star, and Starbucks, K cup coffee led by Green Mountain, Starbucks, and Trilliant, and ready to drink coffee, with Starbucks, Monster Java and Dunkin’ Donuts leading the way. Fifteen Navy ships also have coffee bars managed by Navy Exchange Service Command’s Ships Store Program.

The Air Force, meanwhile, “has four authorized coffee programs that support dining facilities,” said Angelina Cesarez, spokeswoman for the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center and Air Force Services Activity. Those four include S&D, Sara Lee, Maxwell House and Nescafé.

On the more commercially popular side, Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts remain formidable forces in the coffee culture of the military, and both companies have locations on military installations throughout the world.

“Starbucks shows up in four distinct ways on bases, installations and Navy ships,” said Jonathon Cruz, a spokesman for Starbucks.“ The first is through our fully branded Starbucks Retail Licensed Stores across the globe in approximately 100 locations. These are identical to the stores that Starbucks owns and operates in the public domain. The second is though our ‘We Proudly Serve’ program. Thirdly, we show up in commissaries, where we offer our retail coffee down the aisle. Lastly, while there are no licensed stores on aircraft carriers, through our partnership with NEXCOM, we do serve espresso and blended beverages on all 10 carriers. In addition, select military mess halls, ships and submarine galleys brew Starbucks coffee.”

Service members have access to 34 Dunkin’ Donuts locations on military installations in the U.S., as well as 10 more located on international bases, said Julia Block, a spokeswoman for Dunkin’ Donuts.

Unfortunately, the Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard did not respond to an inquiry about preferred brands of coffee.

So, while that remains unknown, one thing is certain: that morning cup of dark roast is starting to smell a whole lot like freedom.
