A federal judge ruled Monday that transgender individuals can begin enlisting in the military on Jan. 1, denying a request by the Trump administration for a delay.

The decision is the latest hurdle in President Donald Trump’s effort to ban transgender people from serving in the military. The administration argued that transgender recruits would have to overcome a lengthy and strict set of physical, medical and mental conditions, and that the Pentagon is not prepared to begin accepting transgender applicants.

But U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly rejected that argument, noting how much time has passed since the initial ruling in October.

What do you think? Do you agree with the judge’s ruling?

The title “Father of the U.S. Navy” has been bestowed upon President John Adams and John Paul, but Military History magazine, in a new cover story, has bestowed the title of “true father of the U.S. Navy” on Commodore John Barry.

Here are 5 facts about John Barry:

1. Barry set a record by traveling 237 miles by dead reckoning in a 24-hour period ― the fastest known sailing day recorded in the 1700s.

2. Barry volunteered for President George Washington by serving as his courier, helping to facilitate the crossing of the Delaware and participating in the battles of Trenton and Princeton.

3. When Congress formally established the U.S. Navy in March 1794, Barry became not only the first commissioned officer, but also the first flag officer in the sea of service.

4. Barry fought the last sea battle of the Revolutionary War off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Fla., in March 1793, which also marked the last battle fought by a Continental Navy ship, the USS Alliance.

5. Barry’s brother-in-law William Austin, a Tory, is believed to have come aboard the frigate Effingham to promise him 20,000 gold guineas plus command of a Royal Navy ship to surrender the frigate to the British. But Barry simply rejected the proposition and “spurned the eyedee of being a treater.”

An in-depth profile on John Barry appears in the January 2018 issue of Military History, a Military Times sister publication. For more information on Military History, and all of the HistoryNet publications visit historynet.com.

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy after leaving his post in Afghanistan in 2009, will be free of prison time, a judge ruled Friday. He will also be dishonorably discharged from the Army and reduced in rank to private.

Bergdahl made what‘s known as a “naked plea” without striking a deal with prosecutors in hopes of leniency from the judge. “I understand that leaving was against the law,” Bergdahl admitted to the judge, Col. Jeffrey R. Nance, during his pretrial hearing.

Bergdahl spent five years captive of the Taliban after deserting his post, prompting intense search and rescue efforts. He was ultimately released in a prisoner swap for five Guantanamo Bay detainees.

Veterans groups are rallying efforts to convince Congress to lift restrictions on cannabis testing that would help researchers learn more about its potential health benefits.

One group in particular is opening lawmakers’ eyes to the positive impact from cannabis studies and discussing the challenges vets face from opiod addiction. Members of the Veterans Cannabis Project are hoping their efforts will help lawmakers pressure members of the Trump administration who remain staunchly opposed.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is among those against loosening restrictions, arguing that while marijuana remains a Schedule 1 drug, federal law restricts the agency’s ability to conduct research that involves the drug.

President Donald Trump’s phone conversation with the widow of a soldier killed in an ambush in Niger has sparked feverish media coverage and debate. This only adds to the controversy over his response to the death of the four soldiers in the Oct. 4 attack.

In his call to offer his condolences to the wife of Sgt. La David Johnson, Trump allegedly said, “But you know he must’ve known what he signed up for.” The conversation was reportedly upsetting for the widow, according to Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson. However, Trump, in a Tweet and White House statement, denied he made such a remark.

Some say Trump’s alleged response was insensitive and inconsiderate, while others say this shouldn’t be an issue at all.

One White House official said, “The president’s conversations with the families of American heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice are private.”
