{"id":11058,"date":"2018-10-02T04:38:56","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T04:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/02\/us-pacific-fleet-says-chinese-destroyer-came-dangerously-close-to-navy-ship\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:07:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:07:46","slug":"us-pacific-fleet-says-chinese-destroyer-came-dangerously-close-to-navy-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/10\/02\/us-pacific-fleet-says-chinese-destroyer-came-dangerously-close-to-navy-ship\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Fleet says Chinese destroyer came dangerously close to Navy ship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BEIJING \u2014 The U.S. Pacific Fleet says a Navy warship had to dodge a Chinese destroyer during a Sunday morning incident in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/07\/09\/china-newspaper-denounces-us-navy-ships-taiwan-strait-passage\/\" target=_blank>South China Sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a written statement emailed to Navy Times, Pacific Fleet officials say that a Luyang-class destroyer closed on the Decatur around 8:30 a.m. local time Sunday in \u201can unsafe and unprofessional&#8221; manner near Gaven Reef, making a series of \u201cincreasingly aggressive maneuvers\u201d that were accompanied by warnings for the Decatur to leave the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chinese vessel came within 45 yards of the Decatur\u2019s bow before the American warship veered off to prevent a collision, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cU.S. Navy ships and aircraft operate throughout the Indo-Pacific routinely, including in the South China Sea. As we have for decades, our forces will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows,&#8221; added Cmdr. Nate Christensen, Deputy Spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Decatur had been conducting a freedom of navigation operation \u2014 a \u201cFONOP\u201d \u2014 about 12 nautical miles away from the Gaven and Johnson Reefs in the Spratly Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFONOPs are not about any one country, nor are they about making political statements. However, FONOPs challenge excessive maritime claims and demonstrate our commitment to uphold the rights, freedoms, and uses of the sea and airspace guaranteed to all nations under international law,\u201d Chistensen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a
