For Marines it\u2019s a different enemy, but much remains the same"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A near-peer adversary first coercing then forcing Asian nations to bend to its will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A series of islands and key maritime terrain slowly coming under that nation\u2019s control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those pieces of territory becoming a way to keep any outside threats from attacking their Pacific homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Marines landing on those islands to retake lost ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A picture of 1942 or today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this year\u2019s virtual Modern Day Marine Exposition, Maj. Gen. Gregg Olson, Marine Corps staff director, laid out key similarities between the World War II <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/09\/22\/corps-to-begin-3-year-marine-littoral-regiment-experiment-using-hawaii-marines\/\" target=_blank>Marine-led Allied offensive<\/a> on Guadalcanal and adversary Japan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/21\/far-out-field-trip-what-marines-could-learn-from-burning-man\/\" target=_blank>what commanders see coming<\/a> when they look at China in the Indo-Pacific Command theater today.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/08\/05\/heres-what-narcos-could-teach-marines-sailors-about-cocaine-logistics\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cutter-stratton-seizes-cocaine-from-narco-sub.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here\u2019s what narcos could teach Marines, sailors about \u2018cocaine logistics&#8217;<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Some unorthodox thinking from junior sea service officers looks at the drug trade for ideas about how to fight future wars.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small groups of Marines, strung out on atolls and island chains, operating within range of enemy fires in austere conditions. It all has a familiar ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the cyber concerns have echoes in the past, Olson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He compared code breaking efforts with big data analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the terrain hasn\u2019t much changed. The same dense, forbidding jungles and vast distances of ocean await.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a 21st Century fight on a 17th Century battlefield,\u201d Olson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even then, they had their own \u201csensor network.\u201d A covered coastal guard run by Australians and New Zealanders gave Allied forces hours warning of Japanese movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that warning will come from an electronic device and minutes may be all the Marine gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which means staying hidden becomes even more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo be detected is to be targeted and to be targeted is to be engaged and killed,\u201d Olson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like a boxer, the Corps sees closing in as the best way to beat the punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why the Pacific-based forces will remain and operate inside the weapons engagement zone, every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And neither Olson nor fellow speaker, Maj. Gen.
