{"id":11228,"date":"2019-12-27T16:23:25","date_gmt":"2019-12-27T16:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/12\/27\/new-in-2020-drastic-rifle-range-changes-that-will-effect-every-marine\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:08:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:08:45","slug":"new-in-2020-drastic-rifle-range-changes-that-will-effect-every-marine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/12\/27\/new-in-2020-drastic-rifle-range-changes-that-will-effect-every-marine\/","title":{"rendered":"New in 2020: Drastic rifle range changes that could affect every Marine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through most of 2020, top Marine marksmanship experts will recruit an estimated 600 Marines to fire a new rifle qualification that, if adopted, would be the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/06\/13\/no-more-army-adviser-brigades-or-amphib-ships-this-proposed-report-could-radically-change-how-the-services-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\">drastic change<\/a> to how Marines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/11\/08\/marine-grunt-2020-how-the-rapid-transformation-of-small-arms-is-amping-up-the-rifleman\/\" target=\"_blank\">shoot<\/a> in a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout 2019, Marines with Weapons Training Battalion have built a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/10\/30\/the-magtf-is-no-longer-sacred-the-marine-corps-is-looking-at-other-ways-to-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\">more realistic, combat-oriented<\/a> rifle qualification that aims to make Marines not just shooters hunting for a badge but lethal marksmen who know how to destroy enemy targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because they\u2019re putting Marines in combat gear, body armor, helmet and assorted kit, to shoot with the weapon they\u2019ll take to war: M4, M16 or M27.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/11\/22\/we-are-the-front-line-how-the-top-marine-wants-the-corps-sinking-ships-shooting-down-planes-and-killing-enemy-forces\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Berger-cammies.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018We are the front line\u2019: How the top Marine wants the Corps sinking ships, shooting down planes and killing enemy forces<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cLow signatures, bad attitudes and toolkits full of disruptive capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while the current rifle range can take up to two weeks, the new course will take place over only three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day one will focus on holds, zeroing the weapon and a run through the different distances, including a night fire. Days two and three will consist of shooting the qualification course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once they\u2019ve gathered the statistical data from the 600 shooters, training battalion staff will send up recommendations for the course of fire and ranges of qualifications from unqualified to marksman, \u00adsharpshooter and expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It won\u2019t be easy. Times to shoot are shorter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines will shoot more like they would in combat, which includes using their magazine, bipod or ruck sack for support. They\u2019ll shoot starting at the 500-yard line and move closer to the enemy as they would in a firefight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ll shoot at night with night vision. They\u2019ll shoot one human shaped target with a face. No more bull\u2019s eye or prone silhouettes more suited for match rifle competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And shooters on the line won\u2019t be firing a single shot at a time, waiting for Marines to mark their target. Instead, they\u2019ll be told to make their weapons ready and then fire all rounds allotted for that section of the shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines on the target will then
