{"id":12038,"date":"2021-02-23T19:45:46","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T19:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/23\/marines-field-new-rifle-optic-for-better-accuracy-hit-probability\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:08:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:08:03","slug":"marines-field-new-rifle-optic-for-better-accuracy-hit-probability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/02\/23\/marines-field-new-rifle-optic-for-better-accuracy-hit-probability\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines field new rifle optic for better accuracy, hit probability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps recently began fielding a new rifle optic to improve shooter accuracy at distances with both the M4 carbine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/04\/19\/all-of-the-marine-m27-rifles-are-in-if-youre-not-a-grunt-or-working-with-them-youre-not-getting-one\/\" target=_blank>M27 Infantry Automatic <\/a>Rifle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squad common optic is a magnified day optic that has both an illuminated and nonilluminated aim point that\u2019s built to increase effective target acquisition and probability of hit, according to a press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcorsyscom.marines.mil\/News\/News-Article-Display\/Article\/2506889\/marines-receive-improved-optic-to-identify-threats-from-farther-distances\/\" target=_blank>release<\/a> from Marine Corps Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/13\/heres-what-your-next-rifle-optic-will-look-like\/\" target=_blank>s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/13\/heres-what-your-next-rifle-optic-will-look-like\/\" target=_blank>quad common optic<\/a> provides an improved day optic to infantry and infantry-like communities, including reconnaissance units\u201d Tom Dever, project officer for combat optics said in the release. \u201cIt\u2019s a system that improves situational awareness and decreases engagement times, greatly benefiting Marines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SCO will replace the rifle combat optic, and is a bit larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/02\/28\/marines-select-a-brand-new-rifle-optic-with-64m-contract\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635932924715068751-2455839jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines select a brand new rifle optic with $64M contract<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Marine units will start to receive the scope in late 2020, with full distribution expected to be completed by fiscal 2023.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new scope weighs 31.5 ounces and is 10.5 inches long \u2015 making it nearly double the size of the nearly 6-inch and 10 ounce RCO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with that size Marines are able to double their magnification, from the current four times magnification of the RCO to eight times with the SCO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps chose the optic in a $64 million contract with Trijicon, the Michigan-based company that builds both the RCO and SCO in February 2022. The initial order was for 19,000 devices, starting with both reconnaissance and infantry units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Dever previously told Marine Corps Times that the scope also comes with a continuously adjustable magnification range, which allows the user to move from one times to eight times magnification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SCO can be rail-mounted by hand, no tools required. And it can work with both M855 and M855A1 variants of the 5.56 mm round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scopes began rolling out to Marines in January and are expected to complete full fielding by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lead engineer for the SCO program, Roger Boughton, provided further contrasts between the systems, saying in the release that the RCO has a fixed magnification but the SCO provides a variable power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means Marines can use the SCO to identify targets at both close and far distances, providing twice the visual range of the RCO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving an optic that can reach out to longer distances will ultimately make the Marine a more lethal first-shot shooter,\u201d said Boughton. \u201cThis means they can use less rounds to overwhelm an enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That option can buy time when selecting and engaging targets by providing more accurate round placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s all about making an accurate decision,\u201d said Maj.
