A retired lieutenant colonel and Tennessee native, Asher considered many factors before moving west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKirkland is a lakeside community that just provided a lot of wonderful parks and a great opportunity to move around the region,\u201d he said. \u201cThe weather is absent extremes. The recreation is abounding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No state income tax is also a plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kirkland, home to more than 5,000 veterans like Asher, is one of the top 50 small cities for veterans on Military Times\u2019 newest Best Places to Live ranking. It earned the fifth slot in this year\u2019s rankings of cities with fewer than 75,000 residents, behind Glen Burnie, Waldorf and Ellicott City in Maryland, and O\u2019Fallon, Missouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Antonio; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Colorado Springs, Colorado; San Diego and Lincoln, Nebraska topped the list of the best 25 large cities for veterans. The top five medium-sized cities were Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia, as well as Centennial, Colorado; Olathe, Kansas; and Columbia, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We used data from multiple sources to compare locations across three broad categories: veteran and military culture and services, economic indicators \u2014 some veteran-specific and some not \u2014 and livability factors such as crime, health, school quality and traffic. Among the factors considered were cost of living, employment, health and school ratings, proximity to top ranked colleges and companies, and many other criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Honoring Vets<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His city\u2019s placement near the top of the list for large cities came as no surprise to Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city is within 25 miles of nine military installations and has the largest percentage of active-duty residents of any large city on Military Times\u2019 list. Veterans represent 17 percent of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sessoms, who has led the coastal city since 2009, said he often hears from service members that if they have to leave the area, they\u2019ll come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe reason, I believe, is the quality of life,\u201d he said. \u201cIt gets down to looking all together at the package that we have to offer. It\u2019s a great place to live at a very fair cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the last four summers, the city has partnered with the USO to host Warrior Week, a week-long tribute to wounded veterans and service members that culminates in a large Patriotic Festival along the beach. This year, Danish leaders and wounded veterans joined in the festivities while on a scouting trip to learn how Denmark can better serve its veteran population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why did they pick Virginia Beach?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe care about our military \u2014 plain and simple,\u201d Sessoms said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach2.jpg.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach2.jpg.jpg?resize=200,300 200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,1152 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach2.jpg.jpg?resize=683,1024 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Veterans Day parade in Virginia Beach, Va. (City of Virginia Beach)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Centennial, Colorado, a 17-year-old city in the Denver suburbs, also takes steps to publicly honor its veterans with a Military Voices section on the city\u2019s website, where veterans can share their stories and pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn Colorado, and especially in the metropolitan area that we\u2019re in, embracing the military is the norm,\u201d said Centennial Mayor Cathy Noon. \u201cI think that energy, that value of the military culture is just part of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if Centennial\u2019s Rocky-Mountain vistas aren\u2019t enough to make you want to move to the city, maybe it\u2019s above-average veteran income or award-winning splash pad water attraction will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>A Voice in Government<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Colorado Springs, five out of nine city councilors are military veterans, said the city\u2019s mayor, John Suthers. The city also employs a liaison to the military community and runs a program to help military spouses grow accustomed to life in the city, including by giving tours when they first move to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the cities on our Best Places to Live list also have veteran representation in local government \u2014 whether in elected positions or in advisory roles that give the veteran community an opportunity weigh in on local government decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Antonio has 11 veteran commissioners who advise the city councilors and mayor on city decisions related to healthcare, education and other issues from a military perspective, said retired Maj. Gen. Juan Ayala, director of the city\u2019s Office of Military Affairs, which oversees the veterans commission and works to grow and maintain the city\u2019s large military footprint. In June, the city unveiled its new trademark as Military City USA, a designation from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In O\u2019Fallon, located just outside St. Louis, 15 percent of city employees are veterans, according to Communications Director Tom Drabelle. O\u2019Fallon also has an 11-member Veterans Commission that recently worked with the city council to designate parking spaces for Purple Heart recipients at city parks and other city facilities \u2014 an initiative that has spread to several local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In northern Virginia, Arlington County\u2019s Military and Veterans Affairs Committee initiated efforts last year to host a special ceremony for Vietnam veterans, who didn\u2019t get the same recognition that Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have received, said Mike Rau, an Air Force veteran and vice chair of the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mayor came and spoke and really let them know, \u2018Hey, you\u2019re welcome home.\u2019 That was something that we recommended,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Access to VA Services<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A San Antonio hospital and trauma center serving both military and civilian patients is so renowned, there\u2019s a TV show based on it \u2014 NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Night Shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But fame wasn\u2019t a factor for our rankings, which measured the number of VA health facilities within 10 and 50 miles from each city, benefits administration facilities within 15 and 75 miles, and VA cemeteries within 75 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1159\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach3.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach3.jpg.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach3.jpg.jpg?resize=300,232 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach3.jpg.jpg?resize=768,593 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MTB-P17-VABeach3.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,791 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A mother and daughter reuniting in Virginia Beach, Va. (City of Virginia Beach)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans in the Washington, D.C., metro area had nearby access to more than 40 VA health and benefits facilities \u2014 the most of any that made the list. Several cities in California were near more than 30 such sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some cities have their own one-stop shops to help veterans process their government claims. At Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center in Colorado Springs, for example, veterans can receive counseling, transition support, job placement help, education assistance and other services all under one roof. Even veterans who come up short on rent can contact the center for leads on emergency help, Suthers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near three Air Force bases, an Army base and the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs was home to nearly 10,000 active-duty service members and more than 49,000 veterans in 2015, the most recent year for which census data is available. In El Paso County, where the city is located, more than 30 percent of the senior population is made up of veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe think our support for our troops \u2014 active troops and our veterans \u2014 is unparalleled,\u201d Suthers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wasn\u2019t the only one to think that about his city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I was getting ready to retire, I thought of where do I want to retire that is veteran friendly, the cost of living is good, and there are services that are available,\u201d said San Antonio\u2019s Ayala. \u201cIf you really look at everything the city has done for a long time, I can understand why it was selected as one of the top 25 veterans cities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI moved 23 times in 36 years,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m not going to move again.
