Steenbeke got only minutes to say goodbye to his canine partner when his tour ended in February 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steenbeke then spent years trying to adopt the now 11-year-old dog, who went on to serve with the Connecticut National Guard before her retirement last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/2019\/02\/01\/our-nations-brave-and-loyal-military-working-dogs-honored-with-new-postage-stamps\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/181019-M-ON629-1014C.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Our nation\u2019s \u2018brave and loyal military working dogs\u2019 honored with new postage stamps<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new red and blue &quot;forever&quot; stamps will feature a German shepherd, Labrador retriever, Belgian Malinois and Dutch shepherd.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, Steenbeke and his wife, Stephanie, returned home after picking up Tess in Newtown, Connecticut, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southbendtribune.com\/news\/local\/culver-veteran-reunites-with-service-dog-after-nearly-six-years\/article_8921d4bb-2b2f-5ad6-9828-2b9ed916e1ac.html\" target=_blank>South Bend Tribune<\/a> reported. The playful canine is now getting used to her new home in the northern Indiana town of Culver, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of South Bend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re just looking forward to giving her a good retirement life. Tess&#8217; new favorite toy is a large, red ball she enjoys chewing while curled up on her dog bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The adoption approval took lots of paperwork and help from family, friends, nonprofits and U.S. Rep.
