{"id":13224,"date":"2020-11-16T13:38:39","date_gmt":"2020-11-16T13:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/11\/16\/vas-active-coronavirus-cases-jump-to-more-than-10000\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:21:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:21:38","slug":"vas-active-coronavirus-cases-jump-to-more-than-10000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2020\/11\/16\/vas-active-coronavirus-cases-jump-to-more-than-10000\/","title":{"rendered":"VA\u2019s active coronavirus cases jump to more than 10,000"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active coronavirus cases among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/11\/10\/amid-pandemic-veterans-affairs-secretary-sees-reason-for-both-optimism-and-worry\/\" target=_blank>Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a> patients reached their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/11\/12\/va-coronavirus-cases-reach-record-high-for-10th-consecutive-day\/\" target=_blank>14th consecutive day<\/a> of record-high levels over the weekend, surpassing 10,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before November, the total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accesstocare.va.gov\/Healthcare\/COVID19NationalSummary\" target=_blank>active cases<\/a> spread across the department\u2019s medical centers had not gone above 6,400 at any point since the first coronavirus cases in America were identified in early March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But VA\u2019s active cases \u2014 individuals in contact with the department who have neither recovered from the virus or died from it \u2014 have risen steadily since mid September, and skyrocketed this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/11\/10\/covid-19-scare-forces-va-secretary-to-miss-veterans-day-event\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20189721140700.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">COVID-19 scare forces VA Secretary to miss Veterans Day event<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Robert Wilkie was in close contact last week with HUD Secretary Ben Carson, who tested positive on Monday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, department officials reported 10,362 active cases, up 68 percent over the last two weeks and 252 percent over the last two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sharp increases in active cases come as multiple states across the county have reported their own record-high infection rates. More than 11 million citizens nationwide \u2014 about one in every 30 Americans \u2014 has tested positive for the virus at some point in the last eight months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Military Times last week, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said the increased rate of infections within the VA health care system is inevitable if the virus numbers in the rest of the country continues to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur veterans don\u2019t live in a cocoon \u2026 where you can block yourself off from the rest of the world. They live in the communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA medical centers in Minneapolis and Milwaukee continue to have the most patients with active cases of coronavirus, with 331 and 296 respectively as of Sunday. Three facilities in Missouri (Columbia, Kansas City and St. Louis) each have more than 170 active cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty-seven medical centers have 100 or more active cases they are tracking, according to department data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials have said that they do not view active case counts as a fair reflection of the department\u2019s coronavirus response. They instead insist that the hospitalization rate among infected veterans \u2014 which has remained relatively stable \u2014 is a better marker to gauge success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of VA\u2019s nearly 89,000 total confirmed cases, about 74,000 individuals have recovered. So far 4,327 patients have died from complications related to the illness, about 124 deaths every week of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, at least 66 VA employees have died from coronavirus complications.
