John Richardson said on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNORichardson\/status\/1068971081803931649\" target=_blank>Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/bios\/navybio.asp?bioID=654\" target=_blank>Vice Adm. Scott A. Stearney<\/a> had assumed command of 5th Fleet and Naval Forces Central Command in May, a job that oversees U.S. naval operations in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richardson said Bahraini authorities and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are coordinating but that \u201cat this time, no foul play is expected&#8221; in the death of the 58-year-old man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is devastating news for the Stearney family, for the team at 5th Fleet and the entire Navy,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cHe was a good friend to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials declined further comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifth Fleet\u2019s second-in-charge, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cusnc.navy.mil\/Leadership\/Deputy-Commander\/\" target=_blank>Rear Adm. Paul Schlise<\/a>, has assumed command, Richardson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Chicago native, Stearney commissioned into the Navy in 1982 and was designated a naval aviator two years later, according to his command biography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He served in numerous strike fighter squadrons, flying the F\/A-18 Hornet for squadrons 87 and 136.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stearney led Strike Fighter Squadron 131 and served in Afghanistan as chief of staff of joint task forces there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before taking the helm of 5th Fleet in May, he served as operations director for U.S. Central Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Team, it&#39;s my sad duty to inform you that today the Secretary of the Navy and I were informed that Vice Adm.
