{"id":14210,"date":"2016-02-03T18:16:21","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T18:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/02\/03\/marsoc-corpsman-to-receive-silver-star-for-thwarting-insider-attack\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:59:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:59:50","slug":"marsoc-corpsman-to-receive-silver-star-for-thwarting-insider-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2016\/02\/03\/marsoc-corpsman-to-receive-silver-star-for-thwarting-insider-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"MARSOC corpsman to receive Silver Star for thwarting insider attack"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Navy corpsman <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">2nd Marine Raider Battalion corpsman on Friday <\/span>will receive the nation\u2019s third-highest valor award Friday for taking out a rogue\u00a0Afghan commando who tried to kill U.S. and Italian special operators in an insider attack.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0turned his\u00a0thwarting an insider attack.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Alejandro Salabarria\u00a0will be awarded the Silver Star for heroic actions while deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 with 2nd Marine Raider Battalion. The award will be presented by Maj. Gen. Joseph Osterman, commander of <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">U.S. <\/span>Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, at\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">. The ceremony will take place at MARSOC headquarters, which is located at Stone Bay, Marine Corps Base <\/span>Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 2014 deployment,\u00a0Salabarria and the Marine Raiders were operating alongside Italian and Afghan special operators\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">2nd Marine Raider Battalion were in operation with the Italian special Forces and Afghan Special Operations Commandos <\/span>when a rogue Afghan commando turned on the team. Within seconds, several men had been\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">there were several <\/span>wounded causing\u00a0&#8220;overwhelming chaos across the formation,&#8221; according to a Marine Corps press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salabarria quickly maneuvered into the kill zone to shield a severely wounded corpsman and take out the attacker<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> rogue commando<\/span>. With the threat neutralized, the Miami native treated two wounded team members and coordinated a helicopter medical evacuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;His bold actions ultimately saved the lives of his fellow team members and Afghan Commando partners,&#8221;<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> according to<\/span> the release states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifteen of the 16 sailors to receive the prestigious Silver Star since Sept. 11, 2001, have been corpsmen, according to the Defense Department. That includes\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ose numbers don\u2019t include Navy SEALs.\u00a0It does include <\/span>Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Kevin Baskin, a special amphibious reconnaissance corpsman with MARSOC, who was awarded the medal in March for risking his life to treat Marines under enemy fire in 2013 in Afghanistan&#8217;s<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> the<\/span> Herat province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marine Corps has awarded 136 Silver Stars as of Feb. 1. This includes Staff Sgt. Robert Van Hook, a critical skills operator with 2nd Marine Raider Battalion who <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">. He <\/span>received his medal last month. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">on Jan. 15. He\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van Hook organized a hasty ambush on 10 insurgents in the Herat province in 2013.\u00a0After wounding two and killing four, he led an attack on an enemy-held building with hand grenades and small arms, killing another insurgent and helping detain two others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lance M.
