{"id":14375,"date":"2016-02-26T22:44:59","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T22:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/02\/26\/marine-sniper-foils-alleged-murder-for-hire-plot\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:17:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:17:27","slug":"marine-sniper-foils-alleged-murder-for-hire-plot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2016\/02\/26\/marine-sniper-foils-alleged-murder-for-hire-plot\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine sniper foils alleged murder-for-hire plot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The <\/span>Marine veteran known for an embarrassing wartime controversy is being credited with\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">urinating on dead Taliban is back in the news after<\/span>helping police in Tennessee stop <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ing<\/span>his fianc\u00e9e\u2019s alleged plan to hire a hit man to kill her ex-boyfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Chamblin, a former scout sniper whose military career came to an end after a video surfaced showing <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">of <\/span>him and other Marines\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">his men <\/span>urinating on enemy corpses, tipped off law enforcement in Kingston, Tennessee, that his fianc\u00e9e, Laura Ann Buckingham, had allegedly repeatedly asked for his help in making her ex\u00a0&#8220;go away,&#8221; according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knoxnews.com\/news\/crime-courts\/ex-sniper-thwarts-girlfriends-plot-to-kill-her-ex-say-authorities-2c9f9f68-670c-0148-e053-0100007fb3-370169091.html?d=mobile\">Knoxville News Sentinel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reached by phone Friday, Chamblin declined to comment about the ongoing investigation, but told Marine Corps Times that he and Buckingham had been together since last April and were engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635921000363028962-0101501501jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635921000363028962-0101501501jpg.jpg 640w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635921000363028962-0101501501jpg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Laura Ann Buckingham<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Buckingham<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Roane County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buckingham was arrested Wednesday evening on a warrant for criminal attempt to commit first degree murder of her former boyfriend, Bradley Sutherland, according a <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Roane County Sheriff and 9th District Attorney General offices\u2019 <\/span>joint press release put out by the\u00a0Roane County Sheriff and 9th District Attorney General offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She allegedly\u00a0paid an undercover agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to kill Sutherland, who lives in New Albany, Indiana, the Sentinel reported. The two have a 3-year-old son together, according to the sheriff&#8217;s office release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;[Buckingham] acted with intent to complete a course of action that would constitute the offense of premeditated murder by hiring and paying another to kill Bradley Sutherland and thereby taking a substantial step toward the commission of that offense,&#8221; the release states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chamblin, who shared a rental home with Buckingham, became concerned after she allegedly\u00a0asked him about killing Sutherland several times, the Sentinel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;She stated to him that since he was in the military maybe he had some friends that could do this for him,&#8221; a police incident states, according to the Sentinel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worried about his children\u2019s safety, Chamblin digitally recorded Buckingham allegedly asking him about how to arrange Sutherland\u2019s murder.\u00a0He then gave the recordings to law enforcement officials <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in Kingston, Tennessee, <\/span>who initiated an investigation that<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> which<\/span> led to Buckingham\u2019s arrest, the Sentinel reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a staff sergeant, Chamblin\u00a0served as a scout sniper platoon commander\u00a0with\u00a03rd Battalion, 2nd Marines during\u00a02011 deployment to Afghanistan&#8217;s Helmand province. The\u00a0snipers were on a patrol in\u00a0Musa Qala district on July 27, 2011, when\u00a0Chamblin and three other Marines filmed themselves urinating on Taliban corpses<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> while deployed to Helmand province in 2011<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=bcde404b-24a5-4d9e-916c-7fcd08fe8e8a\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Joe Chamblin, former scout sniper with 3rd Marines, Second Battalion, discusses the fallout from the video showing four Marines urinating of dead Taliban fighters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident received international condemnation when\u00a0the video surfaced online in January 2012. Chamblin later faced a special court-martial and lost a rank. He left the Marine Corps as a sergeant in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told Marine Corps Times <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/story\/military\/archives\/2013\/10\/31\/exclusive-controversial-marine-sniper-fires-back-at-critics\/78543238\/\">in an October 2013 interview<\/a> that he didn&#8217;t see anything wrong with his actions in Afghanistan and &#8220;would do it again.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They were insurgents, they had weapons and they were trying to kill us,&#8221; Chamblin said. &#8220;The same guys were making IEDs and trying to kill Marines. If they could get over here, they would cut off the heads of everybody in this room right now. That&#8217;s how they are. And you know what? I won that day. They didn&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, Chamblin petitioned for an order of protection against Buckingham, who is currently in Roane County Jail.
