{"id":14759,"date":"2016-02-09T14:35:58","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T14:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/02\/09\/marines-using-tuition-assistance-must-complete-new-course\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:34:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:34:59","slug":"marines-using-tuition-assistance-must-complete-new-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/education-transition\/2016\/02\/09\/marines-using-tuition-assistance-must-complete-new-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines using tuition assistance must complete new course"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Marines applying for <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to\u00a0the Corps&#8217; <\/span>\u200btuition assistance <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">program <\/span>\u200bfor the first time must now take a new introductory online course.<br\/><br\/>Effective immediately, completion of the Higher Education Preparation course is mandatory\u00a0for approval to the program and replaces the previous\u00a0College 101 requirement at all installations,\u00a0according to Marine administrative message <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/MessagesDisplay\/tabid\/13286\/Article\/175843\/higher-education-preparation-hep-course-new-tuition-assistance-applicants.aspx\">040\/16<\/a>.<br\/><br\/>The online course is intended to streamline information across the force,\u00a0said Daryl Patrick, education program manager for Marine and Family Programs Division<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, Marine Corps headquarters<\/span>\u200b.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;It basically provides [Marines] information on choosing and applying to an institution to help them meet their goals, and also provides them a basic understanding of their tuition assistance usage and what other avenues they can take,&#8221; he said.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines can access the new<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HEP<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bcourse\u00a0on their own time with their common access card\u00a0via the military&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nemesis.jten.mil\/course number HEP-US001\">Joint Knowledge Online website<\/a>at\u00a0https:\/\/nemesis.jten.mil\/course number HEP-US001<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hourlong course is broken into multiple modules, including education, available scholarships, academic expectations and setting individual goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;After each topic, [Marines] have a test they complete, so it\u2019s not something you can skip through,&#8221; Patrick said. &#8220;It\u2019s something you have to go through, complete each topic and complete the test before you get a certificate at the end.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines present the course completion certificate to their education service officer, who then enters it into the Navy College Management Information System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This opens the door for Marines to potentially access thousands of dollars in tuition assistance to begin their academic career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We\u2019re always looking for something that\u2019s good, that\u2019s not going to hinder Marines; something to make it easier for them to start their careers,&#8221; Patrick said. &#8220;It gives them a taste of education before they get out there to pursue their education.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the HEP course was introduced, Marines were required to take the College 101 course, which\u00a0basically explained what tuition assistance is and how to apply for it, Patrick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The problem was [College 101] wasn\u2019t consistent across the board,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Each base was doing their own classes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new HEP course, however, provides more information and specific guidance tailored to each Marine\u2019s individual goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young Marines often don\u2019t know how to take advantage of the tuition assistance program or what their goals are; the new course points them in the right direction, Patrick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It\u2019s not a different or additional requirement,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It\u2019s replacing a prior requirement, so there\u2019s no additional work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Matthew L.
