Major Troy Black talks about how to foster more well-rounded Marines who can help the Corps for the long haul over the course of a career.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Force fitness also plays an important role in the \u00adMarine Corps\u2019 ability to retain troops \u2014 even if it\u2019s just through their initial enlistment, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/01\/30\/staff-ncos-required-to-earn-college-degrees-the-top-enlisted-marine-could-see-it-coming\/\" target=_blank>t<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/01\/30\/staff-ncos-required-to-earn-college-degrees-the-top-enlisted-marine-could-see-it-coming\/\" target=_blank>he top enlisted Marine. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo physicality and how we develop the fitness of our force has continued to excel,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/02\/07\/recruiting-the-smartphone-contingent-top-enlisted-marine-says-generational-differences-arent-new\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy Black<\/a> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The force fitness summit, sponsored by the top enlisted Marine, took place from Feb. 3 to Feb. 7, located at the Marine Forces Special \u00adOperations Command\u2019s headquarters on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sergeant major invited the sergeants major from every major Marine Corps command, Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, the Medical Officer of the Marine Corps and several other experts on fitness around the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/01\/30\/staff-ncos-required-to-earn-college-degrees-the-top-enlisted-marine-could-see-it-coming\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MAR-Letters-0129.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Staff NCOs required to earn college degrees? The top enlisted Marine could see it coming<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">There could be a Marine Corps in the not too distant future that requires staff noncommissioned officers to receive college degrees in order to fulfill the commandant\u2019s design for the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black wanted to come out of the summit with goals on how to keep Marines fit throughout their career, and plans to ensure every Marine has clear path to getting healthy, if and when they get injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow can we not necessarily change the standard but reduce that? How do we look at recovery once you become injured?\u201d Black asked. \u201cHow do we treat that individual? Do we treat them or do we say okay here we go limdu (limited duty) six months, you know, get fixed and if you make it good, if you don\u2019t you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He visions a facility to every unit where injured Marines can go and see doctors, athletic trainers and psychologists, a location where they can complete their rehab or work on small injuries before they have a chance to turn into major injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is currently working to provide professional athletic trainers to the fleet, capable of working with Marines on some of what Black envisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently the Corps has athletic trainers at entry-level training schools, five infantry regiments and Marine Air Group 15, and will bring 54 to the fleet by 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black also wants to find a way to create a \u00adconversation within the Marine Corps about nutrition along with mental, physical and spiritual fitness so that Marines can put together all the training and resources they have to live a physically fit lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are limitless amounts of education being provided already \u2026 fourth phase Recruit Training speaks on this, we talk about this at ITB and MCT, we have annual training on this stuff, we have gyms, but what we don\u2019t have a habit of doing is putting them all together,\u201d Black said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to add anything to the already \u00adcompletely full schedule that a Marine has to \u00adaccomplish every single day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy gosh, I don\u2019t have time to sit down and read a book on proper vitamins. Right? But being able to develop a healthy lifestyle is more about a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This is part 3 in <\/i><a
