{"id":15005,"date":"2015-04-18T13:55:33","date_gmt":"2015-04-18T13:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/04\/18\/montel-williams-takes-up-imprisoned-marine-s-case\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:09:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:09:14","slug":"montel-williams-takes-up-imprisoned-marine-s-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/04\/18\/montel-williams-takes-up-imprisoned-marine-s-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Montel Williams takes up imprisoned Marine&#8217;s case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Television and radio host <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">and veteran Marine <\/span>Montel Williams is throwing his weight <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u2013 not to mention his personality and reach \u2013<\/span> into the campaign to free a fellow Marine veteran from a prison in Iran. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">imprisoned Amir Hekmati.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iranian authorities have held Amir Hekmati, who served as an infantry rifleman and deployed to Iraq<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> a veteran of the Iraq war and a former Marine<\/span>, in captivity since arresting him during a trip <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to that country <\/span>to visit relatives more than three years ago. Hekmati, who is <span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> The one-time sergeant is <\/span>reportedly living in deplorable conditions, was charged with conspiring against Iran as a spy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a charge he, his family and the U.S. government deny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He is being held because he served this country,&#8221; Williams told Marine Corps Times. &#8220;He is being held because he fought in Iraq. He is being held because they are calling him a traitor to the Iranian people because he fought for our way of life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Williams boasts prior experience in trying to get U.S. citizens out of custody in foreign lands. He publicly lent his support to veteran Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who was imprisoned in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams said getting imprisoned abroad is an issue all service members should be concerned about. There are countries Williams said he doesn&#8217;t visit for that exact reason<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, Williams said<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We leave no Marine behind. Period,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I bought into the fact: That once a Marine, always a Marine. I bought into it in boot camp.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporters have fought to keep Hekmati&#8217;s case <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">alleged plight <\/span>in the limelight, and recently got a boost as the government finalized a nuclear deal with Iran&#8217;s top leadership. But many <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">supporters <\/span>say Hekmati and other Americans imprisoned <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">being held <\/span>there are being left adrift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is despite President <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Barack<\/span> Obama last month calling for Hekmati&#8217;s freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams is not alone in his efforts. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">U.S. <\/span>Rep. Daniel Kildee, D-Mich.,<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> (D-Michigan)<\/span> again pushed lawmakers for Hekmati&#8217;s freedom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=55CMZS_tCOs&amp;feature=youtu.be\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=55CMZS_tCOs&amp;feature=youtu.be\">on the floor of the House of Representatives<\/a> on April 14. Kildee, who represents the area where Hekmati&#8217;s family lives, repeatedly has pressed federal officials to negotiate for his release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like other supporters of Hekmati, including Kildee, who set aside a seat for the veteran at this year&#8217;s State of the Union Address, Williams encourages keeping the dialogue going.
