{"id":15813,"date":"2017-09-07T17:18:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-07T17:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/09\/07\/150-md-530s-may-be-headed-to-afghanistan\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:38:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:38:20","slug":"150-md-530s-may-be-headed-to-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/flashpoints\/2017\/09\/07\/150-md-530s-may-be-headed-to-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"150 MD-530s may be headed to Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Defense Department has awarded a nearly $1.4 billion contract for MD-530F Cayuse Warrior attack helicopters for Afghanistan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract was awarded to MD Helicopters to procure an estimated 150 MD-530F Cayuse Warrior attack helicopters, according to a DoD contract<a> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Contracts\/Contract-View\/Article\/1299955\/\">report<\/a> release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Afghan air force already boasts 27 MD-530Fs, according to latest figures from the Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction, or SIGAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty new MD-530Fs were already slated to arrive in Afghanistan over the next couple of years as a result of approved funding from Congress earlier this year to the tune of nearly $814 million. That aid to Afghanistan is aimed at boosting the fledgling air force\u2019s offensive capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those funds will also support the procurement of 53 UH-60 Black Hawks, six more A-29 Super Tucano fixed wing close attack aircraft, and five armed AC-208 Combat Caravan fixed wing aircraft, according to a report from Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/05\/17\/us-to-provide-afghanistan-with-up-to-159-black-hawks-to-help-break-stalemate\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/march-1-frontlines-1.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US to provide Afghanistan with up to 159 Black Hawks to help break &#8216;stalemate&#8217;<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">With the first delivery expected in about 21 months, will it be too little, too late? <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In total, the Afghan air force will receive 159 UH-60 Black Hawks over the coming years to replace the aging lumbering Russian Mi-17 transport helicopters. However, the procurement of the Black Hawks is contingent on Congressional approval of funds each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, Afghanistan will receive its first armed version of the AC-208 early in 2019, according to Lt. Col. Michael Andrew, a spokesperson for the Pentagon. Those aircraft will be armed with precision guided rockets, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Afghan air force is currently fielding 24 C-208s \u2014 an unarmed version of the Cessna fixed wing aircraft \u2014 according to SIGAR figures. The Afghan air force has used those for transportation and surveillance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before lawmakers in February, Gen.
