Now, runners will be able to participate virtually from wherever they live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement sparked backlash from some social media users, some saying the Marine Corps was bending to political pressure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop trying to keep everybody \u2018safe,\u2019\u201d wrote Facebook user David Colegrove in a post that generated 122 \u201clikes\u201d as of Monday afternoon. \u201cSo tired of it. Life is full of risks. Stay home if you are scared.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/off-duty\/2020\/07\/23\/marine-corps-marathon-canceled-for-the-first-time-in-its-45-year-existence\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-Corps-marathon.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine Corps Marathon canceled for the first time in its 45-year existence<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It wasn\u2019t rain or snow or a hurricane that caused the first cancellation of the Marine Corps Marathon in its 45-year history \u2015 it was the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Rick Nealis, the director of the Marine Corps Marathon Organization, told Marine Corps Times that the cancellation of the in-person event was simply a decision made out of an abundance of caution in line with Department of Defense guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe main focus of [those guidelines] is to protect the force,\u201d Nealis said Monday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine units help in the set up and execution of the in-person event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the organization had planned rigorous health screenings in order to create a safe in-person environment following 2020\u2032s cancellation, Nealis said the Marine Corps couldn\u2019t guarantee that health screenings or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/09\/24\/military-covid-19-deaths-double-in-two-months\/\">COVID-19 precautions<\/a> would keep all of the potential 11,000 runners safe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithout that guarantee, the prudent measure was to cancel it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who registered for the race will be entitled to a full refund, and Nealis said that runners who choose to participate remotely will likely receive a partial refund as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nealis said that in its 46 year history, the race had never been canceled before the pandemic upended large gatherings. Even after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the race was carried on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Marine Corps marathon was really the first major event in D.C. if not the United States, that took the streets back, we brought life back in a lot of ways.\u201d Nealis said. \u201cThis is a different enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other major marathon events across the U.S. had been pushed from spring to fall, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baa.org\/races\/boston-marathon\">Boston Marathon,<\/a> to comply with COVID-19 restrictions.
