We still deliver at 99.5 percent of the time. We have significant efforts to continue to improve on that process, and everybody is working feverishly to get that right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/08\/18\/post-office-officials-backtrack-on-service-changes-that-delayed-veterans-prescriptions\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20230785752468.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Post office officials backtrack on service changes that delayed veterans\u2019 prescriptions<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Federal officials had said veterans mailed medications had been slowed by 25 percent or more in recent months.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday\u2019s hearing was focused on concerns that the USPS will not be able to handle \u2014 or may actively work against \u2014 the rush of mail expected ahead of the November presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millions of Americans (including service members stationed outside their home states) are expected to use the service to cast their ballot, in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, raising worries about the reliability of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But numerous lawmakers also relayed anecdotes of veterans struggling to get mailed prescriptions in a timely fashion because of postal service changes in recent months, a worrisome trend given limited access at Veterans Affairs pharmacy sites in recent months because of the virus outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne veteran fills prescriptions for his VA benefits, and he told me there has been a \u2018noticeable slowdown in mail delivery delays that have caused me to ration my medication,\u2019\u201d Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., told DeJoy. \u201cHe started cutting back on dosage to have pills or skipping alternate days to make them last.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans advocates have reported similar complaints from members in recent months, and incomplete answers from federal agencies on the reasons for slowdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials this week said the average delivery time for veterans prescriptions has slipped from 2.3 days in summer 2019 to nearly 2.9 days this summer, but noted that is still faster than the three to five days the department advises veterans to expect when receiving medicine through the mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA continually monitors prescription delivery times throughout the country and the department has always used a variety of methods to ensure timely delivery, including in-person pharmacies, USPS, and commercial carriers,\u201d Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Curt Cashour said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The postmaster attributed much of the recent service problems to worker shortages and procedure changes related to the coronavirus outbreak. He said he is confident \u201cthe postal service will deliver on this election\u201d and pledged to make sure delivery of ballots, medications and other critical mail is not harmed in coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week he delayed some operation reform plans within the system, but DeJoy said he expects to resume those changes after the November election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to be sustainable, and we need to cover our costs,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a plan to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most \u2014 but not all \u2014 of the criticism from the Senate committee of the post office came from Democrats on the panel. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., blasted accusations of election interference as a \u201cpartisan witch hunt\u201d and hailed DeJoy\u2019s efforts as much-needed reforms for a government bureaucracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy is expected to testify before House lawmakers concerning the same mail delay issues on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My VA prescriptions arrived in my secure lock mailbox today from USPS.
