{"id":17601,"date":"2020-02-22T06:12:21","date_gmt":"2020-02-22T06:12:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/22\/naval-academy-mourns-tragic-death-of-midshipman\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:48:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:48:07","slug":"naval-academy-mourns-tragic-death-of-midshipman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/off-duty\/military-sports\/2020\/02\/22\/naval-academy-mourns-tragic-death-of-midshipman\/","title":{"rendered":"Naval Academy mourns tragic death of midshipman"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A gifted athlete who was slated to commission in three months as a cryptologic warfare officer, U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class David Forney died Thursday evening after he was discovered passed out in Bancroft Hall, officials announced early Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forney, 22, of Walkersville, Maryland, was a left guard on the Navy football team\u2019s offensive line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cause of his death is being investigated but foul play is not suspected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe entire Naval Academy family \u2013 the Brigade of Midshipmen, the faculty, staff, and coaches \u2013 are heartbroken over the tragic and unexpected loss of Midshipman David Forney,\u201d said Vice Adm. (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fellow midshipman discovered Forney unresponsive in his room, according to the Navy. A midshipman certified in CPR tried to resuscitate him and Forney was transported by emergency responders to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aahs.org\/\">Anne Arundel Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was pronounced dead there at 11:28 p.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWords cannot express our pain and sorrow,\u201d said Navy head football coach <a href=\"https:\/\/navysports.com\/coaches.aspx?rc=158\" target=_blank>Ken Niumatalolo<\/a> in the statement. \u201cFirst and foremost, our deepest condolences to the Forney family. The Navy Football Brotherhood is not a team, we are a family. We are devastated to have lost one of our brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We all loved \u2013 and will always love \u2013 David. We pray for strength during this most difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forney\u2019s death is the second tragic loss to rock the Annapolis campus this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Feb. 8, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/02\/09\/navy-identifies-dead-midshipman-who-collapsed-during-prt-run\/\" target=\"_blank\">Midshipman 3rd Class Duke Carrillo<\/a>, 21, of Flower Mound, Texas, collapsed during the 1 \u00bd-mile run portion of the semi-annual Physical Readiness Test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also was pronounced dead at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aahs.org\/\">Anne Arundel Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2015 graduate of Georgetown Preparatory School, Forney completed a year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island, before reporting to the Annapolis campus for the Class of 2020\u2032s Induction Day on June 30, 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A member of the 9th Company and a political science major, he was scheduled to graduate and commission in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their statement, Navy football officer representatives Navy Capt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/Diversity\/staff\/Lindsay.php\" target=_blank>Timika Lindsay<\/a> and Marine Corps Col. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/HUMSS\/Colonel%20Jeffery%20C.%20Smitherman,%20USMC.php\" target=_blank>Jeffrey Smitherman<\/a> called Forney a \u201chard charger on and off the field,\u201d a bright young leader gifted with passion and perseverance, \u201cwhich enabled him not only to see the game, but also inspire and encourage others to become better players and midshipmen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although he didn\u2019t play on the varsity squad in 2016,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalgazette.com\/sports\/navy\/ac-cs-david-forney-feature-1114-20191114-bffrk74wcrgadjtjgej2kpy3fq-story.html\" target=_blank> Forney<\/a> made his debut in Navy\u2019s 2017 opener at Florida Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 6-foot, 3-inch lineman with a listed playing weight of 305 pounds, he excelled that year on special teams and emerged in 2018 as an important member of Navy\u2019s O-line rotation, capable of lining up on the left side or at center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midshipman 1st Class David Forney is survived by parents Erika and Rick and siblings Chris, Rebekah, and Erik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2725\" height=\"4088\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNAdeath3A.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNAdeath3A.jpg.jpg 2725w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNAdeath3A.jpg.jpg?resize=200,300 200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNAdeath3A.jpg.jpg?resize=768,1152 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNAdeath3A.jpg.jpg?resize=683,1024 683w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNAdeath3A.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,1536 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNAdeath3A.jpg.jpg?resize=1365,2048 1365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2725px) 100vw, 2725px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class David Forney.
