{"id":17680,"date":"2022-06-01T21:39:06","date_gmt":"2022-06-01T21:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/01\/marine-veteran-pleads-guilty-to-cyberstalking-sextortion-while-on-active-duty\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:39:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:39:19","slug":"marine-veteran-pleads-guilty-to-cyberstalking-sextortion-while-on-active-duty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/06\/01\/marine-veteran-pleads-guilty-to-cyberstalking-sextortion-while-on-active-duty\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine vet pleads guilty to cyberstalking, \u2018sextortion\u2019 while on active duty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 25-year-old Marine veteran pleaded guilty Friday to charges he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/02\/11\/california-motor-t-marine-faces-federal-cyberstalking-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\">cyberstalked <\/a>multiple women over at least three years in a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/05\/18\/major-sex-trafficking-case-could-trigger-investigations-of-north-carolina-marines\/\" target=\"_blank\">sextortion<\/a>\u201d campaign while on active duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johao Miguel Chavarri faces up to five years in prison on each of the three counts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/03\/23\/cno-cyberstalking-and-bullying-victims-should-come-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\">cyberstalking <\/a>and is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 15 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-cdca\/pr\/former-marine-pleads-guilty-three-counts-cyberstalking\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. District Court for the Central District of California<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chavarri, who had used the alias \u2018Michael Frito,\u2019 had \u201cstalked, harassed and threatened women,\u201d Marine Corps Times had reported in February, mostly from his hometown of Torrance, California, while serving, according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lance corporal had cajoled, then pressured and later blackmailed women to send him, \u201cnude, sexually explicit or otherwise compromising photos and videos of themselves,\u201d according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/02\/11\/california-motor-t-marine-faces-federal-cyberstalking-charges\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-802777572.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">California Motor T Marine faces federal cyberstalking charges<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 25-year-old Marine would first ask for photos and videos of the women\u2019s feet in exchange for money, court documents say. It then would escalate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He would contact victims on platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. At first, he would compliment their looks and then offer to pay them for photos or videos of themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a victim refused to send photos or sent images and later decided not to send more, Chavarri would use \u201cnumerous online accounts,\u201d threatening to punish them by publishing the photos they had sent, sending them to friends, boyfriends, family members and employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He often included names of specific people he would send images, to further the threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one message sent on Instagram to multiple victims, Chavarri said he would spend his \u201cwhole life\u201d ruining their lives. He created fake social media accounts that mimicked some of the victims\u2019 names, using those accounts to send harassing messages to the victims\u2019 friends and family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the Torrance, California, area victims knew each other, according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chavarri sometimes asked victims to send the photos via Snapchat so, as they believed, he couldn\u2019t save the images or take screenshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, Chavarri would send back images of an erect penis, according to court documents. He often claimed to be \u201cMichael Frito,\u201d a married man in New York who worked as an underwater welder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A woman identified as \u201cVictim A\u201d told the FBI that beginning in mid-2019, \u201cMichael Frito\u201d began sending her harassing messages. The 25-year-old woman previously attended Torrance High School in California; the same school Chavarri attended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman sent four photos of her feet in exchange for money. \u201cMichael Frito,\u201d said he\u2019d pay more for sexually explicit images. She agreed and sent five photos and one video of her in her bra and underwear or nude. He later paid her approximately $480 through Cash App, court documents said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A short time later, she told \u201cFrito\u201d she did not want to send any more images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrito\u201d used numerous social media accounts to send her harassing messages as well as text messages through Cash App.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ll expose you to your family friends and boyfriend. I\u2019ll send you videos of me deleting everything if you just stop,\u201d \u201cFrito\u201d sent, according to court documents. \u201cThis is your last chance. All you have to do is accept my money and I\u2019ll delete everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the woman blocked him, Chavarri created new accounts and continued harassing her, according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine then I hope you enjoy receiving them videos,\u201d \u201cFrito\u201d messaged her, according to court documents. \u201cAnd being put on porn hub. . .. And having your career ruined . . . I work on a vpn secure network. I will never get caught.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get the harassment to stop, the alleged victim sent another sexually explicit video. But \u201cFrito\u201d later told her, he \u201cwould never stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been one year! What do you not get ! I\u2019m never going to stop tormenting you,\u201d \u201cFrito wrote her, according to court documents. \u201cOr you can take my 1000 and it\u2019s a win win for everyone and you will never hear from me again. I tried FaceTiming you. I talked to my lawyer I\u2019m not scared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For nearly a year, she didn\u2019t hear from \u201cFrito.\u201d Then in spring 2020 he began sending harassing messages and threats again, according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chavarri had enlisted in 2018 and had arrived at Camp Pendleton, California, where he had worked as a 3531 motor vehicle operator with an unidentified unit in 1st Marine Division, according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was married in 2020, according to court documents.
