A company of U.S. Marines recently sailed midway around the\u00a0Australian continent aboard an Aussie ship,\u00a0About 180 members of Marine Rotational Force\u2013Darwin were recently transported from\u00a0Marines embarked on the landing helicopter dock HMAS Adelaide on June 16, <\/span>marking the first time that many U.S. troops of this size <\/span>went to sea with their Down Under matesaboard an Australian <\/span>\u00a0since World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 180 members of\u00a0The Marines of Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, <\/span>Marine Rotational Force\u2014Darwin were transported more than 2,000 miles from Port of Brisbane, Queensland, on Australia’s east coast to\u00a0from Camp Pendleton, California, and 90 U.S. soldiers joined an additional 500 MRF-D Marines\u00a0in <\/span>Adelaide in the south, Australia, on June 22 for Exercise Hamel<\/span>.\u00a0The Marines\u00a0\u2014 mostly grunts from the California-based 1st Battalion, 1st Marines\u00a0\u2014 spent about a week aboard the Australian landing helicopter dock Adelaide.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once they reached their destination, they\u00a0joined up with U.S. and Aussie soldiers for Exercise Hamel,\u00a0a three-week\u00a0brigade-level training event.\u00a0The Australian A <\/span>army-led non-live fire, force-on-force <\/span>exercise runs through June 25-<\/span>July 15 in South Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the seven days aboard the HMAS <\/span>Adelaide, the Marines engaged in various physical training events and competitions, including a 72-hour cycle competition, said\u00a0MRF-D spokeswoman <\/span>1st Lt. Sarah Rhodes, a spokeswoman for MRF-Darwin\u00a0said in an email to Marine Corps Times<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You would see many Australians and U.S. service members spending their free time together, competing in basketball games, and sharing experiences,” she Rhodes <\/span>said. “While the statistics may differ from a U.S. ship, such as the size and the number of the ship\u2019s crew, the day-to-day activities were very similar.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing that stood out to the Marines, though, was the ? The <\/span>chow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The food was fantastic on the ship,” said Sgt. Mitchell Wilkerson, a squad leader with MRF-Darwin\u00a01st Squad Leader, 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment<\/span>. “Probably the best food I\u2019ve had in the Marine Corps.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wilkerson said he enjoyed having the different branches on the ship as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We\u2019d have pickup games of basketball with the [U.S. troops] and Australians out there,” he said in an email to Marine Corps Times<\/span>. “While we are different branches, we all know how to operate and accomplish the mission.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exercise Hamel includes more than 8,000 service members from the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army<\/span>, Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Air Force<\/span> and the <\/span>New Zealand Army<\/span>.\u00a0It focuses on platoon-size elements “exercising combined fundamental war-fighting skills in order to enhance each participating nation\u2019s capacity to execute tactical mission sets in a combined operating environment,” Rhodes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\u00a0marks the seventh year of Exercise Hamel, but it’s the\u00a0and the <\/span>first time it has been held in South Australia instead of Queensland. U.S.<\/span> Marines have been participating in the exercise since 2012, when the service kicked off its rotations Down Under.\u00a0There were 150 leathernecks involved in Exercise Hamel that year. This year, it’s four times that amount\u00a0training with Australian troops, but this year has more than 600<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Marines aboard from<\/span> the HMAS <\/span>Adelaide, who just concluded Exercise Southern Jackaroo in Queensland with Japanese and Aussie troops, Australia, <\/span>brought along with them <\/span>47 Humvees igh Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles<\/span>, 12 7-ton trucks Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements<\/span> and four heavy tactical vehicles Logistics Vehicle Systems Replacements<\/span>, in addition to the battalion\u2019s weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lt. Col. Steven Sutey, 1\/1’s\u00a0commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, MRF-D<\/span>, said it\u2019s unique exercise for the Marines participating in the exercise <\/span>because they’re normally they are <\/span>the higher headquarters element with international troops falling under them\u00a0and have international elements fall under them<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is a great opportunity for us to work as a subordinate element for an international higher headquarters, very similar to what we would do in Afghanistan,” he said in an email to Marine Corps Times<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once Exercise Hamel is complete, the Marines will return to Darwin in the Northern Territory to\u00a0, Australia, to <\/span>prepare for Exercise Koolendong, a battalion-level training event typically held in the Australian Outback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
