{"id":18399,"date":"2018-04-02T20:00:16","date_gmt":"2018-04-02T20:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/02\/marine-snipers-are-getting-new-mk-13-rifles\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:23:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:23:52","slug":"marine-snipers-are-getting-new-mk-13-rifles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/02\/marine-snipers-are-getting-new-mk-13-rifles\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine snipers are getting new Mk 13 rifles"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=4b312d10-9906-410d-a2b2-97e22e083641\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-4b312d10-9906-410d-a2b2-97e22e083641.png\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Marine Corps has confirmed they will soon carry the MK 13 Mod 7 sniper rifle after decades of using different versions of the M40 rifle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/03\/05\/sniper-shortage-too-many-marines-are-washing-out-of-sniper-school\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Marine snipers<\/a> have been carrying some version of the M40 rifle since the Vietnam War, but now the Corps is about to arm its snipers with a new weapon system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/shot-show\/2018\/01\/24\/longtime-military-optics-maker-unveils-new-scope-for-army-snipers\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">snipers<\/a> will soon be carrying the Mk 13 Mod 7 sniper rifle, Marine spokesperson Capt. Christopher Harrison confirmed to Marine Corps Times Monday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selection of the Mk 13 Mod 7 closes a chapter in the Corps\u2019 journey to upgrade its sniper teams with a new rifle that will extend range and lethality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mk 13 fires a .300 Winchester Magnum, or Win Mag round, and has a range that pushes beyond 1,000 yards, former snipers told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1966, Marine snipers have been carrying the Remington based bolt-action M40 as the preferred rifle. That rifle has gone through multiple modifications, including changes in 2014 that produced the M40A6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former snipers who spoke to Marine Corps Times said they have long complained that the M40 simply didn\u2019t have the range to contend with conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the M40\u2019s nearly 1,000-yard range is behind other sniper rifles in the U.S. military\u2019s arsenal. The Army\u2019s M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle can engage targets at 1,300 yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One sniper hailed the decision to equip the Corps\u2019 snipers with the Mk 13 as a \u201clong time coming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the rifle isn\u2019t the only piece of gear the Corps may be interested in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pictures have appeared online from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JosaphatOrozcoPhotography\/photos\/a.169764639742956.44139.114953091890778\/1801219389930798\/?type=3&amp;theater\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">Josaphat Orozco photography<\/a> that show Marines firing the Mk 13 with the Nightforce ATACR scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy\u2019s recent budget documents released in February sought money to buy \u201cthe MK 13 Rifle with associated optic.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Marine Corps officials would not confirm whether the Nightforce optic will be fielded with the Mk 13 at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, one former sniper said that, if fielded, the new scope is even more exciting than the Mk 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new scope comes with the Horus Tremor3 Reticle. The reticle allows an operator to rapidly engage targets at long ranges. It features special wind dots that aid a shooter in quick wind estimations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The documents for justification of the fiscal year 2018 annual defense legislation included nearly $4.3 million in funding for the rifle. The Corps plans to purchase 356 rifles, which will kit out the Corps\u2019 sniper teams with the Mk 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane division out of Crane, Indiana, holds the contract for the Mk 13 Mod 7.
