Col. Francisco X. Zavala is the fourth Marine commander in recent weeks to be sacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commander of the 1st Marine Division, Maj. Gen. Robert F. Castellvi, relieved Zavala over \u201clost trust and confidence\u201d in his ability to continue to lead 1st Recon battalion, a press release stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Jeffrey Erb has been appointed as the new commander of 1st Recon Battalion, according to the release. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/06\/marine-colonel-commanding-cyber-operations-fired-following-drunk-driving-arrest\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Douglas-Lemott.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine colonel commanding cyber operations group fired following drunk driving arrest<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Col. Douglas Lemott Jr. was the third colonel fired in recent weeks from a key command position.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps provided no further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zavala was commissioned as an officer in 2000, and has deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2004, he was a platoon commander for 1st Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company, Security Force Battalion, according to his official military bio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 2011 to 2014, Zavala served as the battalion operations officer for 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, his bio stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, Zavala commanded the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force\u2013Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four Marine commanders \u2015 all between the ranks of lieutenant colonel and colonel \u2015 have been relieved over the past several weeks \u2015 two of those incidents may be related to drunk driving charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 22, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/04\/25\/marines-fire-squadron-commander-of-hornet-involved-in-fatal-crash-with-kc-130j-that-killed-six\/\" target=_blank>Lt. Col. James R. Compton <\/a>was relieved of his command of the Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 in Iwakuni, Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compton\u2019s squadron was involved in the deadly Dec. 6, 2018, collision of an F\/A-18 and KC-130J off the coast of Japan, which claimed the lives of six Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just days later, the head of Marine Corps Installations Command sacked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/newsletters\/daily-news-roundup\/2019\/05\/02\/quanticos-commanding-officer-of-headquarters-and-service-battalion-fired\/\" target=\"_blank\">Col. John B. Atkinson<\/a>, who commanded Headquarters and Service Battalion at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to arrest record, Atkinson was arrested on drunk driving charges April 12 in Prince William County, Virginia, and refused a blood alcohol test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col. Douglas Lemott Jr., the commander of Marine Corp Forces Cyberspace Operations Group, was relieved by Maj. Gen. Matthew G. Glavy on May 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court records show Lemott was arrested in Virginia for driving while intoxicated on April 28. Lemott is due in court on June 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Ground combat reporter Todd South contributed to this
