{"id":18828,"date":"2019-06-06T18:13:41","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T18:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/06\/06\/the-corps-wants-a-special-helmet-for-grunts\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:14:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:14:26","slug":"the-corps-wants-a-special-helmet-for-grunts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/06\/06\/the-corps-wants-a-special-helmet-for-grunts\/","title":{"rendered":"The Corps wants a special helmet for grunts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slew of cables, headsets and mountable tactical gear for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/05\/10\/grunts-may-be-one-step-closer-to-getting-this-ops-core-style-helmet\/\" target=\"_blank\">military helmets<\/a> has the Corps looking for a new lightweight and integrated helmet for infantry Marines, according to Marine officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s being dubbed the integrated helmet system, or IHS, and the Corps posted its wish list for the new helmet June 4 on the government\u2019s business opportunities website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbo.gov\/index?s=opportunity&#038;mode=form&#038;id=f4085055b1fe1dda6890b9edc4da2f4e&#038;tab=core&#038;_cview=0\" target=_blank>FedBizOpps<\/a>, seeking input from industry leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The posting from Marine Corps Systems Command says the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/04\/16\/heres-the-new-helmet-that-socom-operators-will-take-into-battle\/\" target=_blank>helmet system<\/a> is intended for \u201cinfantry and infantry-like Marines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith the increased number of battery powered optics and other attachments to the helmet, the amount of exposed\/unsecure wires and battery packs are increasing,\u201d the FedBizOpps posting reads. \u201cThe Marine Corps is looking for an optimized configuration to allow power and\/or data to flow to the attachments while minimizing bulk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/10\/soon-all-marines-may-be-looking-tacticool-with-new-peltor-like-headsets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Peltor.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Soon all Marines may be looking tacticool with new Peltor-like headsets<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Corps plans to order between 7,000 and 65,000 new headsets over the next several years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to details laid out in the posting, the Corps is seeking a lightweight helmet with a rail mounting system for tactical device attachments. The Corps also wants its new helmet to be compatible with headsets and night vision devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The desired weight of the helmet, according to the posting, is between 2.91 pounds for a small helmet, to 3.84 pounds for an extra-large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps\u2019 push for a new helmet for grunts follows testing of various high- to mid-level cuts of the already fielded enhanced combat helmet, or ECH, by the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, the Marine Corps ordered nearly 200 Gentex Corp. ECH helmets with various cuts to test their compatibility with a range of new tactical headsets and hearing protection devices. Gentex is the maker of the iconic Ops-Core high-cut style helmet worn by special operations forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wp-govmedia-gearscout-10614-8d7a4370jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wp-govmedia-gearscout-10614-8d7a4370jpg.jpg 800w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wp-govmedia-gearscout-10614-8d7a4370jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wp-govmedia-gearscout-10614-8d7a4370jpg.jpg?resize=768,511 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ops-Core FAST Shell overall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high-cut Ops-Core helmet is also compatible with hearing protection devices like the Peltor headsets worn by Marine Raiders. The Corps is seeking to order thousands of new tactical headsets that will afford Marines hearing protections without losing communications and battlefield situational awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manny Pacheco, a spokesman for Marine Corps Systems Command, said the effort to design a new grunt helmet is aimed at improving \u201cthe integration of several current and future head-borne systems such as optics and hearing enhancement\/protection devices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s been rumored for some time that the Corps was interested in fielding an Ops-Core style helmet to grunts.
