Col. Brandon H. Turner, the unit\u2019s final commander, in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur Marine Corps moves forward, and we, ever faithful to the cause, move forward as well. Fortune Favors the Brave. We are and always will be the Island Warriors,\u201d Turner added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/01\/14\/marine-recon-platoon-takes-on-urban-fight-as-it-preps-for-deployment\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7006702.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine recon platoon takes on urban fight as it preps for next deployment<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Fighting in certain urban environments still remains one of the \u201cessential tasks\u201d for the 31st MEU, despite the shift toward distributed operations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit was founded on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3rdmardiv.marines.mil\/Units\/3d-Marine-Regiment\/2nd-Battalion\/Lineage\/\" target=\"_blank\">May 1, 1942<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3rdmardiv.marines.mil\/Units\/3d-Marine-Regiment\/2nd-Battalion\/Lineage\/\" target=\"_blank\">,<\/a> as the 3rd Training Battalion during the Corps\u2019 expansion during World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battalion was redesignated as 2\/3 the following month, and in 1943 it was the first to land on Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though the battalion was deactivated from 1945 to 1951, it had earned a well-known legacy in the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Island Warriors have served bravely and fought well in Bougainville, Guam, the Republic of Vietnam, Kuwait and Afghanistan,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CY47wE5P5rv\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lt. Gen. James Bierman,<\/a> commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force, in a memo about the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 2005 and 2011 the battalion deployed to Afghanistan three times and to Iraq twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battalion is \u201cone of the finest and most storied battalions currently in the Marine Corps,\u201d Bierman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battalion was deactivated as 3rd Marines is slated to become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/09\/22\/corps-to-begin-3-year-marine-littoral-regiment-experiment-using-hawaii-marines\/\" target=\"_blank\">3rd Marine Littoral Regiment.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/01\/29\/new-corps-formation-marine-littoral-regiment-may-be-how-the-corps-fights-future-battles\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine littoral regiment<\/a> is a new formation the Corps is debuting that will be specifically designed for a dispersed fight in the littorals of any future war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 3rd MLR will be the Corps\u2019 first official Marine littoral regiment and the final makeup of the unit will be based on experiments it conducts in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile today is a somber day in history as the Island Warriors deactivate, today symbolizes a critical shift for the Marine Corps; a necessary shift to once again answer the call,\u201d said Col. Timothy S. Brady Jr., the commander of 3rd Marines, said during deactivation ceremony. It is \u201ca shift that enables the Marine Corps to reorganize and establish new formations like the Marine littoral regiment, a unit ready to fight and win against any rising threat in the Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though it was a somber day for some, Bierman looked back at the battalion\u2019s initial deactivation after World War II for clues to the unit\u2019s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is every likelihood that we have not seen the last of 2\/3; it may be the page is only being turned on the latest chapter,\u201d the III MEF commander said in his memo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf, at some time in the future, Corps and Nation again call, the proud colors and streamers of 2\/3 will once again be uncased,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe Island Warriors have served bravely and fought well in Bougainville, Guam, the Republic of Vietnam, Kuwait and Afghanistan,&#8221; said Lt.
