{"id":19283,"date":"2021-10-18T13:05:18","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T13:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/10\/18\/heres-what-was-new-for-marines-at-its-massive-naval-exercise\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:45:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:45:05","slug":"heres-what-was-new-for-marines-at-its-massive-naval-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/18\/heres-what-was-new-for-marines-at-its-massive-naval-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s what was new for Marines at its massive naval exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, the 3rd Marine Division, using new technology, and experimental formations and tactics, modernized its concepts for the war of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The raid took place as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/08\/09\/navy-marine-corps-aim-to-refine-test-modern-warfighting-concepts-in-large-scale-exercise-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\">Large Scale Exercise 2021<\/a> \u2015 potentially the largest exercise conducted by the Marine Corps and Navy since the Cold War, according to a Navy press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exercise involved 17 time zones and all three Marine Expeditionary Forces alongside five numbered fleets \u2015 putting to test some concepts of Force Design 2030 and working to improve Navy-Marine Corps integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/13\/corps-to-fire-ship-sinking-missile-in-pacific-as-demonstration-of-force\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/NSM-JLTV.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Corps to fire ship-sinking missile in Pacific as \u2018demonstration of force\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Marines will fire a Naval Strike Missile from a Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary (ROGUE) fires vehicle Sunday to sink a Navy hull in the Pacific.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Infantry Marines with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, took off from Marine Corps Base Hawaii on MV-22 Ospreys and CH-53E Super Stallions for a 135-mile trip to another island where the assault took place, Capt. Josue Marquez, Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to landing, Marine commanders on the Ospreys were able to take a close look at the enemy positions observed by a drone sent over the landing zone ahead of the assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe (Network On-the-Move Airborne) can actually give the commander a picture while he\u2019s flying \u2026 while the troops are in movement, to keep eyes on the objective to monitor any changes and make changes on their course accordingly,\u201d said Cpl. Brooks Woodhill, a transmission systems operator with headquarters company for 3rd Marine Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Woodhill, a trained radio operator, said he recently learned how to the use the Network On-the-Move Airborne, and noted how easy it was to pick up on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>New grunt formations<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grunts deployed in an experimental formation that had infantry units ditching weapons companies and platoons, while using every Marine on every weapon depending on the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat this allows us to do is get more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/03\/05\/the-carl-gustaf-is-coming-marines-get-ready-for-these-pouches-for-your-rounds\/\" target=\"_blank\">specialized training <\/a>on every single weapons system versus just what we were trained to do at the schoolhouse,\u201d Sgt. Lorenzo Monclava, a team leader with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, told Marine Corps Times in a phone interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some 0311 rifleman even learned the basics of firing a mortar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the leaps \u2026 that I\u2019ve experienced myself is just seeing how quickly each individual can learn all sorts of different weapons systems and all the cross training that we\u2019ve done,\u201d Lance Cpl. Alexis Moradian, Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change of formation and the new technology for platoons, like drones, allowed the infantry Marines to take more responsibility at a lower level, Monclava said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt allows us to pull away from what a normal infantry unit would do, be more decentralized and be able to be more self-sufficient,\u201d Monclava said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with the greater independence, small-unit leaders will have to take on more responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a response the Corps is overhauling its basic infantry training course and working to age up the Marines who take over those roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps is working hard to ensure sergeants oversee fire teams, staff sergeants are in charge of squads, while gunnery sergeants take over as platoon sergeants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a lot more seniority in our (company) than we ever had before,\u201d Monclava said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monclava said between his squad leader and the team leaders they have a combined 30 years of infantry experience to help lead the young inexperienced Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor most of these guys it was their first attempt at a raid, so it allowed us to show them what right looks like and the things that we did do wrong we were easily able to fix,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experimentation did not end when the grunts secured the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/03\/29\/role-reversal-marine-artillery-and-infantry-swap-roles-in-exercises-preparing-for-a-littoral-fight\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6124880.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Role reversal: Marine artillery and infantry swap roles in exercises preparing for a littoral fight<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">They took artillery officers as mission commanders for infantry forces.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the island was secure, the artillery Marines arrived with M777s but conducted fire missions with a notional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/30\/marines-strap-missile-to-truck-and-strike-target-at-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Naval Strike Missile<\/a>, Maj. Kurt Stahl said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps sees its role in the future fight as one that opens up sea lanes for the Navy by sinking enemy ships or forcing them to stay in port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Strike Missile, used by Marines well-hidden on small islands or dense jungle in the South China Sea, is one of the keys to making that mission work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps already has committed to switching most of its artillery batteries from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/09\/how-a-marine-corps-shift-to-long-ranges-may-change-its-strong-cannoneer-tradition\/\" target=\"_blank\">tube artillery <\/a>to ones capable of firing the Naval Strike Missile, to up its fire power against a near-peer adversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the exercise Marines launched a Naval Strike Missile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/24\/fly-it-shoot-it-sink-it-float-it-home-see-marines-sink-navy-ship-with-new-missile-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">at a scrapped Navy hull<\/a> and used an unmanned ship to transport logistical support to dispersed Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the size of the exercise and the amount of experimentation, for Monclava this exercise was just another day preparing for war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe train every single exercise like it could be a real world mission, we have a very high level of trust and confidence in the ability of our Marines,\u201d Monclava said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some 0311
