Christopher Bronzi, commander of the 15th MEU, said in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe steadfast dedication of the Marines, sailors, and Coast Guardsmen to the persistent rescue effort was tremendous,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/09\/13\/15-marines-injured-after-amphibious-assault-vehicle-burst-into-flames\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/amphibious-assault-vehicle.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">14 Marines, 1 sailor hurt after amphibious assault vehicle catches fire<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The accident happened at Camp Pendleton, California.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps, along with Navy and Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, conducted an \u201cextensive 40-hour\u201d search for the missing troops, covering more than 1,000 nautical miles, according to the press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The names of the Marines and sailor will be released 24 hours after next-of kin-notification, according to the press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AAV was returning to the amphibious transport dock Somerset Thursday after completing a training mission with the 15th MEU on San Clemente Island, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At around 5:45 p.m. the crew reported that they were taking on water and soon after the vehicle started \u201crapidly\u201d sinking with all 16 service members onboard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/07\/31\/what-we-know-about-thursdays-aav-accident\/\" target=_blank>Marine Corps Times <\/a>previously reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight of the service members onboard were able to escape and were immediately returned to the Somerset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once there, three Marines were rushed to a hospital, where one was soon pronounced dead, Lt. Gen. Joseph L. Osterman, commander of the I Marine Expeditionary Force based in Camp Pendleton, California, said at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/08\/01\/commandant-suspends-waterborne-aav-training-as-search-for-marines-continues\/\" target=_blank>Friday evening press conference.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other two are in critical condition, according to Sunday\u2019s press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assisting in the search efforts were the guided-missile destroyer John Finn, the amphibious assault ship Makin Island, the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock Somerset, and the amphibious transport dock San Dieg, according to the press release, along with 11 Navy SH-60 helicopters and multiple small boats from the Corps and Navy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour and a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Sector San Diego also assisted, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe 15th MEU and the ARG leadership determined that there was little probability of a successful rescue given the circumstances of the incident,\u201d the press release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know all of us in the USMC family are extremely saddened following the announcement of the end of SAR (search and rescue) operations,\u201d Marine Corps Commandant Gen.
