Robert Neller released\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">issued <\/span>a video message to Marines Friday\u00a0\u2014\u00a0one\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">clarifying official policy to Marines a <\/span>day after Defense Secretary <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">of Defense <\/span>Ash Carter held a Pentagon press conference announcing his decision to lift gender-based restrictions throughout the military. Neller stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the top enlisted Marine to announce that the Corps will immediately begin &#8220;full integration of [the] force.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">&#8220;Yesterday we received the Ssecretary of Ddefense\u2019s decision and we\u2019ll immediately begin full integration of our force,&#8221; Neller said in the 47-second clip. <\/span>&#8220;As we move forward, we will maintain our standards and maximize the talent and skills of all Marines\u00a0\u2014\u00a0male and female \u2014\u00a0to strengthen our Corps <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">core <\/span>and increase our combat effectiveness,&#8221; Neller said in the 47-second clip.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<style>.oembed-asset-link { background: #fff; border-bottom: 1px solid #e1e1e1; }.oembed-link-anchor { display: block; clear: both; }.oembed-link-thumbnail{ float: left; padding: 14px; }.oembed-link-thumbnail img { max-width: 78px; max-height: 60px; display: block; }p.oembed-link-title { font-size: 75%; color: #009BFF; margin: 0 14px; padding-top: 12px; font-weight:normal; text-align: left; line-height: 120%;  }p.oembed-link-desc { font-size: 100%; color: #666; font-weight: normal; margin: 0 14px 14px 14px; font-family: 'Futura Today Light'; text-align: left; line-height: 120%; }<\/style>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Carter made his decision despite requests for exception to gender integration by Gen. Joseph Dunford, who served as the Marine commandant until September, when he became\u00a0the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> Gen. Joseph Dunford, made earlier this year while he was serving as Commandant of the Marine Corps<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marine Corps <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">partially <\/span>released part of a months-long study on gender integration earlier this year. The data released showed that\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">an internal study earlier this year which concluded <\/span>male-only combat arms units outperformed mixed-gender teams. Dunford made his recommendation to Carter that some fields remain closed to women following that study.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ones and recommended keeping these jobs closed to women.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recommendations put the Corps at odds with both the Navy and Army, which have been strongly in favor of gender integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While the Marine Corps asked for a partial exception in some areas &#8230; <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">[\u2026], <\/span>we are a joint force, and I have decided to make a decision which applies to the entire force,&#8221; Carter said at the briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neller\u2019s message <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">alongside Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps Ronald Green <\/span>echoes previous commitments made by Marine Corps leadership to execute Carter\u2019s decision on the women in combat roles.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> issue, whether or not the Secretary of Defense agreed to the exceptions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lt. Gen. Robert Bailey, the Corps\u2019 top operations officer at Plans, Policies and Operations, told Marine Corps Times in October that no matter what the defense secretary\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Secretary of Defense <\/span>decided, Marines will <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">must <\/span>carry out their mission<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> no matter what<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When [Carter] makes the decision, as Marines always have in the past, we salute and carry out orders,&#8221; said Bailey, who also serves as the Marine Corps&#8217; ground combat element&#8217;s advocate.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">he said. <\/span>&#8220;We are going to be fine; the Marine Corps is in great shape.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Carter\u2019s decision opens about 220,000 combat arms positions to women, mostly in Army and Marine <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Corps <\/span>infantry and armor military occupational specialties.
