{"id":19671,"date":"2015-11-22T15:16:49","date_gmt":"2015-11-22T15:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/11\/22\/marines-help-central-american-troops-develop-training\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:35:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:35:34","slug":"marines-help-central-american-troops-develop-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/11\/22\/marines-help-central-american-troops-develop-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines help Central American troops develop training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Central American troops gearing up to fight <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">against <\/span>the brutal gangs and\u00a0drug cartels plaguing their region will soon train at schoolhouses that small teams of Marines helped develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 280 Marines began returning to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in mid-November\u00a0following a six-month<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> deployment to four Central American countries. It marks the end of the inaugural deployment for\u00a0Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force \u2014\u00a0South, which was headquartered at\u00a0Soto Cano Air Base in Honduras.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines spent the\u00a0deployment working alongside military partners\u00a0in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Belize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They built new schools, runways and other infrastructure in the troubled region while remaining at the ready to assist with any humanitarian crises that emerged during hurricane season. Katelyn Hunter\/Marine Corps<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Honduras, four Marines and a Navy corpsman helped the naval infantry at Puerto Castilla\u00a0form professional military training centers, similar to the Corps&#8217; enlisted infantry schools and The Basic School for officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We were definitely pioneers,&#8221; said Capt. Juan Diaz, a military police officer who served as the Honduran SCT&#8217;s officer in charge. &#8220;We helped establish and start up an institution\u00a0of sorts in this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine\u00a0SCT in Belize accomplished something similar. After every training session with Marines,\u00a0members of the Belizean Defense Force and Coast Guard were always asking for more, said Staff Sgt. William Haddix, the team&#8217;s\u00a0staff NCO in charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;[That] actually led to our team developing the Infantry Leaders Course, which is designed to build the officer and senior NCO corps,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The Central American troops training with the Marines have been tasked with demanding missions in recent years to fight U.S.-bound\u00a0drug traffickers in\u00a0and around their countries&#8217; jungles,\u00a0rivers and coasts.\u00a0The region has been beset by\u00a0violence tied to that trade, which has led to the mass exodus of tens of thousands of unaccompanied child migrants whose families are seeking better lives for them in the U.S.\u00a0Murder rates in places like El Salvador and Honduras\u00a0are some of the highest in the world as teens\u00a0face death threats <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to<\/span>if they don&#8217;t join up with gangs, and cartels threaten local officials who refuse to support their crimes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Military partners there continue to look to Marines to help them develop skills needed to win those fights.\u00a0Lt. Col. Abraham Lopez\/Marine Corps<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Belize, military leaders have been working with Marines to develop more robust physical training regimens. Belizean troops are sent deep into mountainous jungle terrain where cartels and international criminals move\u00a0illicit goods. Shakeasha Payton\/Marine Corps<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hudak said for many of the Marines in Central America, it was their first deployment<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">fist time deploying<\/span>. Now they&#8217;ll head back to the fleet <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">with <\/span>not only with refined skills tied to their\u00a0military occupational specialties, but also with newly found confidence, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They might be a 21-year-old lance corporal, but they&#8217;re a big deal when they come to another country and stand in front of another nation&#8217;s military,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They build up that confidence when doing something outside their normal MOS.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diaz, who led the team in Honduras, said his Marines didn&#8217;t immediately realize the impact they were having <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">had<\/span>on that country&#8217;s military as they helped <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in helping <\/span>develop the infantry and officer courses for new troops\u00a0there.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;At first, they were just doing their jobs,&#8221; he said. &#8220;&#8230;I actually sat down and explained to them the level of impact, that\u00a0we actually did something really big in developing these new courses. It definitely got the Marines out of their comfort zones, and they&#8217;ll now be\u00a0better mentors to their own Marines.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next iteration of SPMAGTF-South will deploy again next spring during 2016&#8217;s hurricane season. The Marines were equipped\u00a0with four CH-53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopters that could be used to help evacuate in the event of a tropical storm.
