Seth McKee was 100. He died Dec. 26 in Scottsdale, Arizona, according to <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/scottsdale\/2016\/12\/27\/scottsdale-general-seth-mckee-highest-ranking-survivor-d-day-dead-age-100\/95889332\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/scottsdale\/2016\/12\/27\/scottsdale-general-seth-mckee-highest-ranking-survivor-d-day-dead-age-100\/95889332\/\">The Arizona Republic<\/a>, citing McKee\u2019s wife, Sally.<br\/><br\/> Just two months ago, McKee was awarded the National Order of the Legion of Honor in the rank of Chevalier 5, according to the <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.luke.af.mil\/News\/ArticleDisplay\/tabid\/3070\/Article\/998665\/air-force-general-receives-frances-highest-honor.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force<\/a>. That\u2019s the highest honor France bestows on its citizens and foreign nationals.<br\/><br\/> McKee, who began his military career in 1935,\u00a0logged more than 190 hours in 69 combat missions in the P-38 Lightning<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">participated in 69 combat missions in the\u00a0P-38 Lightning<\/span>\u200b,\u00a0and is credited with downing two enemy aircraft. He flew cover for the D-Day invasion and was involved in bombing missions at Saint-Lo, the Falaise Gap and the Battle of the Bulge.<br\/><br\/> After World War II, McKee held positions of increasing responsibility both at home and overseas.<br\/><br\/> He retired in 1973 as commander of the North American Air Defense Command.<br\/><br\/><img decoding=\"async\" data-alignment=\"center\" data-object-id=\"00000159-50cd-d88e-ad79-fded29f20000\" data-type=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/snagfilms-a.akamaihd.net\/99\/03\/bd9c8ce741789d44be8e713f5ccb\/gen-mckee-3.JPG\"\/><figcaption> <span>Retired Gen. McKee graduated from flight training in February 1939.<br\/> <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">During World War II, he logged more than 190 hours in 69 combat missions in the P-38 Lightning, \u00a0\u200bdestroying two enemy aircraft.<\/span><br\/><br\/> After the war, McKee served in Florida, California, Alabama, Italy, Georgia, Nebraska, South Dakota and the Pentagon.
