The Russian maritime aircraft never entered U.S. or Canadian airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCOVID-19 or not, NORAD continues actively watching for threats and defending the homelands 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,\u201dGeneral Terrence J. O\u2019Shaughnessy, the commander of NORAD said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Russian IL-38 maritime aircraft are also used to hunt submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been a string of Russian patrol aircraft intercepts near Alaska over the last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, U.S. and Canadian jets intercepted Russian reconnaissance aircraft near Alaska spying on a U.S. submarine exercise known as ICEX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe continue to see repeated Russian military aviation activity in the Arctic and we will defend the U.S. and Canada against these threats emanating from our northern approaches,&#8221; O\u2019Shaughnessy said about the March intercepts near the submarine exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICEX is a three-week biennial exercise that allows the U.S. to assess the readiness of its submarines to operate in the Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2020\/03\/14\/four-russian-reconnaissance-aircraft-intercepted-while-spying-on-us-icex-submarine-exercise-again\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/intercept.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Four Russian reconnaissance aircraft intercepted while spying on US ICEX submarine exercise again<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cThis is the second and third time this week that incursions into our air defense identification zones were met and escorted by NORAD fighters.
