{"id":20382,"date":"2017-11-29T14:27:44","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T14:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/11\/29\/warning-order-issued-on-va-loan-scams\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:14:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:14:46","slug":"warning-order-issued-on-va-loan-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/va-loan-center\/2017\/11\/29\/warning-order-issued-on-va-loan-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Warning Order&#8217; issued on VA loan scams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Veterans Affairs Department issued a joint \u201cWarning Order\u201d last week asking service members and veterans with VA loans to beware of \u201ctoo good to be true\u201d unsolicited offers that could turn out to be financial scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the types of offers that should set off alarms, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/about-us\/blog\/cfpb-and-va-warno-va-refinancing-offers-sound-too-good-be-true\/\">a CFPB blog post<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lower-than-expected interest rate offers that don\u2019t include specifics regarding term length, rate type (adjustable or fixed), or points.<\/li><li>Promises of skipped mortgage payments, a tactic expressly forbidden by the VA for vendors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/homeloans\/irrrl.asp\">Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan<\/a>.<\/li><li>Escrow refund promises that appear linked to specific amounts, but may depend on how much money is left in escrow when the loan closes.<\/li><li>Aggressive or unusual sales tactics, such as repeated phone calls or offers to refinance almost immediately after closing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home-hq\/va-loan-center\/\">VA home loan<\/a> recipients who believe they\u2019re being hassled by scammers or think they\u2019ve unknowingly entered into a scam can file a CFPB complaint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/complaint\/\">here<\/a>, or call the bureau at 855-411-2372.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA loan recipients who are facing financial difficulties may be more vulnerable to some of these pitches.
