David Berger wants the Corps to remove all \u201cConfederate-related paraphernalia&#8221; from Marine bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The directive was part of a memo sent by Berger to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/06\/21\/the-corps-is-getting-a-new-assistant-commandant\/\" target=\"_blank\">a<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/06\/21\/the-corps-is-getting-a-new-assistant-commandant\/\" target=\"_blank\">ssistant commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Gary Thomas<\/a>, a Marine official told Marine Corps Times Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The memo included several other items for \u201cimmediate action,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/02\/21\/top-marine-says-his-immediate-execution-items-include-more-gender-integration-smarter-grunts-and-changes-to-parental-leave-policy-for-adoptive-same-sex-parents\/\" target=_blank>i<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/02\/21\/top-marine-says-his-immediate-execution-items-include-more-gender-integration-smarter-grunts-and-changes-to-parental-leave-policy-for-adoptive-same-sex-parents\/\" target=_blank>ncluding directives on increased gender integration and potential changes to the Corps\u2019 maternity leave policy<\/a>, which Berger announced on Friday through Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Last week, the Commandant of the Marine Corps directed specific tasks be reviewed or addressed by Headquarters Marine Corps staff,\u201d Marine spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/marine-corps-bans-confederate-symbols\" target=_blank>Maj. Eric Flanagan told Task &amp; Purpose Wednesday.<\/a> \u201cMany of the tasks were published on Twitter Friday. Activist groups have called for the removal of Confederate monuments on government property, claiming that the U.S. government should not celebrate leaders of a rebellion meant to save slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others argue that taking down monuments is erasing history \u2015 and is muting and forgetting the hard-fought Civil War battles between the North and the South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/08\/16\/there-are-10-posts-named-after-confederates-should-the-army-re-name-them\/\" target=_blank>The Army currently has 10 installations named after Confederate leaders<\/a>, Army Times previously reported, and the Navy has had several ships named in honor of the Confederacy, including the still active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/08\/15\/meet-the-navy-ships-named-in-honor-of-the-confederacy\/\" target=_blank>guided-missile cruiser Chancellorsville<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Marine Corps has no installations named in honor of the Confederacy. It is still unclear what will be removed if this order is officially inacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Marine Corps Times will update this story as we confirm more. <\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commandant Gen.
